Aidan O’Brien Looking For First Irish 2000 Guineas Win Since 2023 With Gstaad

Despite being the leading trainer of the Irish 2000 Guineas with TWELVE wins, Aidan O’Brien has only won the race twice since 2017 and his last winner was Paddington in 2023.

Gstaad looks very likely to give O’Brien a welcome winner in the first Irish Classic of the season.

He was last seen finishing second in the English equivalent where Bow Echo destroyed the field, giving his rivals no chance of catching him.

Gstaad should come on bundles for that race and at least keep up his 100% career record of finishing inside the top two.

He already won over £750,000 as a two-year-old and if he put together that kind of form on Saturday then he should take all the beating.

There’s no surprise he’s the market leader in the Irish 2000 Guineas betting odds.

British Trainers Have Done Well In Recent Irish 2000 Guineas Renewals

Although the Irish 2000 Guineas runners are set to be mostly local horses, the Brits have done well in recent years when heading over for the race.

Last year’s renewal was won by Field Of Gold, who led home fellow British horse Cosmic Year for a Juddmonte 1-2.

And the year before, Rosallion was the winner and both were sent off favourite.

Charlie Appleby has also won the Irish 2000 Guineas recently, with Native Trail taking the prize home in 2022. And this year we see two Godolphin representatives in Distant Storm and Native Trail.

But who’s the leading British contender in 2026?

To me, ALPARSLAN would be the best of the Brits if he turns up. He was a non-runner at Newmarket earlier this month due to the ground, but is definitely worth his place in a 2000 Guineas and could go well at the Curragh if declared.

The son of Dandy Man made a solid start to his three-year-old season when landing the Group 3 Greenham Stakes at Newbury, taking his overall record to three wins from four starts.
