Which Horse Won The Grand National Last Year (2025)?

12 months ago in 2025, it was NICK ROCKETT that blasted home for backers – but at Grand National odds of 33/1 it was a race for the bookies as opposed to the backers.

Despite coming into the race off the back of two wins at Gowran Park and Fairyhouse, Nick Rockett was one of the lesser fancied Willie Mullins runners in the race.

Mullins saddled six of the 34 runners in 2025, with his main rider Paul Townend staying loyal with the 2024 Grand National winner I Am Maximus.

Townend’s horse almost pulled off a famous double, coming home in second – just 2 1/2 lengths behind Nick Rockett.

While Mullins actually fired in a National 1-2-3 last year when Grangeclare West took third in the race covered by the ITV Racing schedule.

Nick Rockett still holds an entry for the 2026 Grand National, where the handicapper has allotted him 3lbs more in weight (11st 11st).

The last horse to win with 11st 11lbs or more was the mighty Red Rum in 1974 (12st).

Ahead of the 2026 renewal, the Nick Rockett Grand National odds are 28/1 with the best horse racing betting sites.

Trainer Willie Mullins Has Won The Last TWO Grand Nationals

Willie Mullins, who was the top trainer at the recent 2026 Cheltenham Festival, had his first Grand National winner back in 2005 with Hedgehunter (watch below).

The Trevor Hemmings-owned chaser was ridden by Ruby Walsh, who had won the race five years earlier on his dad’s horse Papillon.

Hedgehunter returned the 7/1 Grand National favourite in 2005.

Mullins had to wait 19 years for his next winner in the world-famous race – when I Am Maximus won in 2024 under jockey Paul Townend.

The win gave Townend his first Aintree National success, while it was the third for famous owner JP McManus, who had won the race with Don’t Push It (2010) and Minella Times (2021) before.

Then, just like buses, the next Willie Mullins Grand National winner came in the very next year – with the already mentioned Nick Rockett having the most afterburners.

Meaning Mullins has won the last two Grand Nationals heading into 2026 – as he looks to become the first stable to win the race three wins on the spin since Vincent O’Brien (1953-1955)

How Have The Grand National Favourites Fared Recently?

When looking at the recent Grand National winners, it also tells us it’s not been too bad a race for the market leaders.

Despite the competitive nature of the race, with 34 runners, the race has seen THREE winning favourites in the last six renewals.

Meaning a 50% return for Grand National favourite backers since 2019.

A lot can happen between now and the race on Saturday 11th April, with I Am Maximus, Grangeclare West, Jagwar and Iroko some of the horses vying for the favourites berth.
