Welbury won the 3:12 Marske Fabrications Straight Mile Handicap at Redcar by seven lengths. Seven. At 9/1, in a 14-runner Class 4 handicap, without coming off the bridle until two out. If you had it: £10 on the Tote. If you didn’t: at least it was quick.

The Race Story
Edward Bethell’s gelding travelled strongly down the straight mile, cruised into the leaders’ slipstream, hit the front two furlongs out and simply kept going, stopping the clock in 1m 33.32s — the only winner on the card so far to beat standard time, on an afternoon when everything else has been running slow. Barley plugged on for second at 11/2 with Nyman a length and a quarter away third; the rest were in a different race. Oisin Orr’s day out at the seaside: one ride into the winner’s enclosure, barely a hair out of place.
Tipster Accountability
This was one of the two races on the card the morning preview covered without naming a bottom-line fancy, so no score moves — the preview’s Redcar ledger stays two-from-three after Saxon Grace and Raggaas. The tracked national tipsters don’t come to Redcar on Shergar Cup day. Smart move, on this evidence: the winners here keep coming from the second row of the market.
Looking Ahead
The 3:47 Racing TV Handicap is the preview’s main remaining Redcar interest: Democracy Dilemma at 13/8 in a five-runner sprint, Goodwood form in the book, “the one to beat” per this morning’s verdict. Five runners, short favourite, straight five furlongs — nowhere to hide for anyone.
