The Bottom Line
- Yimmna (2.02) – 13/8 – the William Haggas newcomer-with-experience looks the banker on the card.
- Democracy Dilemma (3.47) – 13/8 – Glorious Goodwood form makes him the one to beat in a five-runner sprint.
- French Affair (5.31) – 13/8 – won for the Jennie Candlish yard at Goodwood and can follow up.
- Saxon Grace (2.37) – 2/1 – each-way solid after a fine third at Hamilton. Odds correct at time of writing.
Meeting Context
The Redcar races today offer seven contests between 2.02pm and 5.31pm on the seaside track’s famous straight course, and conditions could hardly be better for fast-ground horses. The going is Good to Firm, Good in places, with sunny spells and temperatures nudging 24C forecast for the Yorkshire coast.
This meeting is not on ITV – the cameras are at Ascot for Shergar Cup day instead – but every race is live on Racing TV. You can check what is being shown terrestrially in our ITV racing schedule guide, and if you want the big-stage action we have previews of Ascot’s Shergar Cup card and the Group action at Haydock too.
Draw-wise, low numbers have historically held a slight edge in the sprint races on quick ground, something worth bearing in mind in the two five-furlong heats mid-card. Odds quoted below are correct at time of writing.
2.02 – Maiden Stakes (Class 4, 7f)
| No (Draw) | Horse | Jockey | Trainer | Form | Odds |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 8 (8) | Yimmna | Cieren Fallon | William Haggas | 72 | 13/8 |
| 3 (3) | Raggaas | Oisin Orr | Simon & Ed Crisford | 442 | 9/4 |
| 4 (4) | Vastern | Tom Eaves | Adam Kirby | 23 | 4/1 |
| 1 (1) | War And Love | Ben Robinson | Brian Ellison | 5-9344 | 8/1 |
| 2 (2) | Khanimambo | David Nolan | David & Nicola Barron | – | 14/1 |
| 7 (7) | Suntino Lady | William Pyle | David & Nicola Barron | – | 14/1 |
| 6 (6) | Magic Lady Mae | Darragh Keenan | Lawrence Mullaney | 677060 | 33/1 |
| 5 (5) | Bowie Lass | Alex Jary | Nigel Tinkler | 6 | 66/1 |
The Favourites: Yimmna was green on debut at Yarmouth but finished a promising second to a potentially smart rival at Newmarket, and the Haggas yard rarely sends one this far north without a plan. Raggaas has hit the frame in all three starts for the Crisfords.
The Value: Vastern at 4/1 has solid placed form and is interesting for the fledgling Adam Kirby stable.
The Verdict: Yimmna to get off the mark.
2.37 – Celebrate The Life Of Ann Allport Handicap (Class 6, 7f 219y)
| No (Draw) | Horse | Jockey | Trainer | Form | Odds |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 (4) | Saxon Grace | Shane Gray | Daragh Bourke | 746403 | 2/1 |
| 6 (6) | Here Comes Louie | Joanna Mason | Roger Fell | 90-862 | 7/2 |
| 7 (7) | Park Lane Penny | Tom Eaves | Ivan Furtado | 69821 | 4/1 |
| 3 (3) | Dalamara | Cam Hardie | Ben Haslam | 1-4246 | 7/1 |
| 2 (2) | Miss Potomac | Oisin Orr | Kevin Ryan | 89-5 | 10/1 |
| 8 (8) | Diamond Aura | David Allan | Tim Easterby | -54247 | 10/1 |
| 1 (1) | Ice Show | Mark Winn | David O’Meara | 5560 | 12/1 |
| 5 (5) | Itszaboy | Alex Jary | Nigel Tinkler | 7-0665 | 20/1 |
The Favourites: Saxon Grace travelled strongly at Hamilton last week and arguably played her hand too late when a close third; she remains unexposed around a mile off this mark. Here Comes Louie ran well at this trip last time.
The Value: Dalamara drops back in trip for Ben Haslam and won over course and distance last season.
The Verdict: Saxon Grace to go two places better.
3.12 – Marske Fabrications Straight Mile Handicap (Class 4, 7f 219y)
| No | Horse | Jockey | Trainer | Form | Odds |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9 | Welbury | Oisin Orr | Edward Bethell | -12241 | 9/2 |
| 10 | Illy’s Roo | Joanna Mason | Gemma Tutty | 877715 | 6/1 |
| 3 | Capital Guarantee | Mark Winn | David O’Meara | 209061 | 7/1 |
| 4 | Paladin | William Pyle | Kevin & Lauren Frost | 25-102 | 7/1 |
| 5 | Mr Mistoffelees | Jonathan England | Sam England | -87522 | 8/1 |
| 12 | Barley | David Allan | Tim Easterby | 232333 | 8/1 |
| 1 | Gorgeous Mr George | Taryn Langley | Dylan Cunha | 888114 | 10/1 |
| 2 | Frankies Dream | Sean D Bowen | Jennie Candlish | 332378 | 10/1 |
| 8 | Nyman | Cieren Fallon | Roger Fell | 644064 | 12/1 |
Plus five others in a full field of 14 for the feature straight-mile handicap.
The Favourites: Welbury was never far off the pace when scoring at Pontefract and the Bethell yard has its string in fine order. Illy’s Roo bounced back to form with a win at Thirsk.
The Value: Nyman at 12/1 may have slipped to a tempting mark and should strip fitter for recent racecourse experience; Barley is relentlessly consistent without winning.
The Verdict: Welbury, with Nyman the each-way alternative.
3.47 – Every Race Live On Racing TV Handicap (Class 3, 5f)
| No | Horse | Jockey | Trainer | Form | Odds |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Democracy Dilemma | Tom Eaves | Robert Cowell | 309604 | 13/8 |
| 2 | Spring Is Sprung | David Nolan | Paul Midgley | 474320 | 3/1 |
| 5 | Sports Coach | Cam Hardie | Antony Brittain | 869822 | 3/1 |
| 4 | Rosenpur | Darragh Keenan | Jennie Candlish | 615649 | 11/2 |
| 3 | Fidelius | Alex Jary | Nigel Tinkler | 212560 | 10/1 |
The Favourites: Democracy Dilemma ran a cracker when fourth in a big field at Glorious Goodwood last week and this five-runner Class 3 is considerably easier. Sports Coach, a recent York runner-up, is the obvious danger.
The Value: Spring Is Sprung acts well on quick ground and Paul Midgley’s sprinters need no introduction at this track.
The Verdict: Democracy Dilemma to dominate from the front.
4.19 – Market Cross Jewellers Classified Stakes (Class 6, 5f)
| No (Draw) | Horse | Jockey | Trainer | Form | Odds |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 7 (7) | Ellie’s De Vega | Cieren Fallon | Philip Kirby | 343352 | 3/1 |
| 8 (8) | Gwen Tennyson | William Pyle | Gemma Tutty | 346792 | 7/2 |
| 3 (3) | Doralee | David Nolan | David & Nicola Barron | 694423 | 9/2 |
| 4 (4) | Let’s Go Hugo | Harry Russell | Ollie Pears | 487083 | 11/2 |
| 5 (5) | Pinpoint | Tom Kiely-Marshall | Suzzanne France | 0-6624 | 8/1 |
| 6 (6) | Up The Monk | Tom Eaves | Michael Appleby | 164870 | 10/1 |
| 2 (2) | Bust A Moon | Darragh Keenan | Derek Shaw | 006-03 | 16/1 |
Brave Bob is a non-runner, leaving seven to face the starter.
The Favourites: Ellie’s De Vega, second at Newcastle latterly, makes plenty of appeal at level weights on stable debut for Philip Kirby, with Cieren Fallon an eye-catching booking. Gwen Tennyson caught the eye at Catterick on Tuesday.
The Value: Doralee is rarely out of the frame in this grade.
The Verdict: Ellie’s De Vega.
4.57 – Remembering Christine And Colin Brown Handicap (Class 6, 1m 5f 218y)
| No | Horse | Jockey | Trainer | Form | Odds |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 | Newport | Oisin Orr | Iain Jardine | 400/54 | 5/2 |
| 7 | Dubai Venture | Joanna Mason | Tina Jackson | 2-2612 | 7/2 |
| 1 | Buxted Reel | Darragh Keenan | Tom Lacey | 1/321- | 9/2 |
| 6 | Billy Bathgate | David Nolan | Ewan Whillans | 343461 | 6/1 |
| 3 | Nanny Park | Ryan Sexton | Sara Ender | 807310 | 10/1 |
| 4 | Saratoga Gold | William Pyle | Kevin & Lauren Frost | 2-3266 | 10/1 |
| 8 | Time Twister | Lewis Chalkley | Michael & David Easterby | 0664-5 | 10/1 |
| 5 | Spooky Wooky | Andrew Elliott | Simon West | 7236-7 | 20/1 |
| 10 | Galistra | Tom Kiely-Marshall | Alan Brown | 85507 | 25/1 |
Gemical is a non-runner.
The Favourites: Newport heads the market for Iain Jardine but is still lightly raced on the Flat after a long absence. Dubai Venture won over 1m4f last month and the step back up in distance might eke out further improvement.
The Value: Buxted Reel, a dual-purpose recruit from the Tom Lacey yard, is fascinating if fit enough on his first Flat start for a while.
The Verdict: Dubai Venture for the in-form Joanna Mason.
5.31 – Watch Race Replays On Racing TV Handicap (Class 5, 5f 217y)
| No | Horse | Jockey | Trainer | Form | Odds |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | French Affair | Sean D Bowen | Jennie Candlish | 542461 | 13/8 |
| 3 | Masaban | Oisin Orr | Edward Bethell | -61352 | 9/2 |
| 7 | Houndhill | Alex Jary | Nigel Tinkler | 810081 | 9/2 |
| 5 | Brave Traveller | Cam Hardie | Bryan Smart | 592732 | 6/1 |
| 2 | Space Bear | Cieren Fallon | Michael Appleby | 139230 | 13/2 |
| 6 | Bye Law | Duran Fentiman | Tim Easterby | 660330 | 8/1 |
| 4 | Bleep Test | David Allan | Tim Easterby | 34-080 | 25/1 |
The Favourites: French Affair overcame a troubled passage to beat 25 rivals in a Class 4 at Goodwood on his first start for Jennie Candlish, and a 3lb rise looks lenient. Masaban and Houndhill, a last-time-out winner, head the dangers.
The Value: Brave Traveller is better than his last run and handles fast ground well.
The Verdict: French Affair to complete the double for his new yard.
