The penny dropped at last for Huscal in the 7:40 at Lingfield. The classiest horse on the card, placed on each of his last two starts, went off even-money favourite for the Hewanorra Handicap and won it by a length and a quarter for Jason Watson and Charles Hills — another preview verdict landed.

The Race Story
Our preview reasoned that the switch back to Polytrack “looks the day the penny drops” for a horse who had been knocking on the door all summer on turf, and the race played out to that script. Watson kept the 6/4-into-evens favourite covered up over the seven furlongs before angling out, and once Huscal hit top gear the seven-runner field was sorted out quickly.
Tattie Bogle, an 11/2 chance this morning but allowed to drift to 11/1, kept on for second under Callum Shepherd to give Charlie Johnston’s yard another placed effort on the night after Kanzi’s win in the 7:10, while Rogue Supremacy stayed on into third at 13/2. Arantes Nascimento, the preview’s 4/1 each-way alternative, finished out of the frame.
Tipster Accountability
The Lingfield preview is having a night: Halimede (6:40) and now Huscal make it back-to-back winning verdicts, and Kanzi obliged in the 7:10 too. The 27/1 four-fold never survived Sunlit Sea’s defeat in the opener, which stings, because the last three legs are doing their job. None of the tracked national tipsters in today’s tipster review had money down here, so Templegate’s ledger sits where it was.
Looking Ahead
One race left on the Polytrack tonight: the 8:10 Rodney Bay Classified Stakes, where A Lott Of Kane — a comfortable Wolverhampton winner last week and the final leg of that ill-fated acca — is a warm order at 5/4, with Roman Spring the chief threat at 13/2 for the shrewd Cook-Bridger partnership.
