Lingfield Races Today: Can Prescott and Morris Land a Treble?

The Bottom Line

  • Sunlit Sea (6.10) – 7/4: Prescott’s front-runner is two from two last month and only 3lb higher back on Polytrack.
  • Halimede (6.40) – 5/6: Bolted up at Catterick on Tuesday and looks well treated under a penalty; the banker of the night.
  • Huscal (7.40) – 6/4: Knocking on the door all summer and drops back to the all-weather with conditions ideal.
  • A Lott Of Kane (8.10) – 5/4: Comfortable Wolverhampton winner last week and faces demonstrably weaker rivals here.

Lingfield races today serve up a six-race evening card on the Polytrack, running from 5.40pm to 8.10pm, and while the quality is modest, the storyline is anything but. Sir Mark Prescott and Luke Morris team up in each of the first three races – and all three of their runners are prominent in the market.

Meeting Context

The going is Standard on Lingfield’s Polytrack, with a warm, dry evening forecast – mostly sunny, temperatures up to 27C and just a light southerly breeze. No surprises from the surface, then, and the card should ride true.

This meeting is not part of ITV’s Saturday coverage – the cameras are at Ascot, Haydock and Newmarket this afternoon (full details in our ITV racing schedule) – so Lingfield is live on Sky Sports Racing instead. If you want the terrestrial action first, our Ascot Shergar Cup preview and Haydock Rose of Lancaster preview have the day’s headline meetings covered before the evening shift begins here.

Draw bias is a minor factor over the sprint trips at Lingfield, with low numbers marginally favoured over 5f and 6f, but small fields tonight should blunt any edge.

5.40 Saint Lucia Let Her Inspire You Handicap (Class 6, 1m7f169y)

No (Draw) Horse Jockey Trainer Form Odds
4 (7) Si White Luke Morris Sir Mark Prescott 69613 11/10
2 (6) Balgowan George Downing Seamus Mullins 4-3122 5/1
5 (5) Femme Fatale George Wood James Tate 49-852 11/2
7 (3) Fabled Spirit Gina Mangan Archie Watson 0803 7/1
8 (9) Last Flight Jonny Peate James Horton 7-7753 8/1
6 (8) Sir Griflet Callum Shepherd Dylan Cunha 564600 14/1
3 (2) Man Of The Sea Taylor Fisher Neil Mulholland 0-5944 20/1
9 (10) October Surprise Tyler Heard Sheena West 8698-5 20/1

Plus two others: Trooper (40/1) and Make A Splash (33/1).

The Favourites: Si White heads the market at 11/10 for the Prescott yard. Blinkers go on for this first try at a marathon trip, and the stable’s record when stepping unexposed three-year-olds up in distance is the stuff of legend. Balgowan, a course-and-distance winner, is next best at 5/1.

The Value: Make A Splash is 33/1 but is bred for this sort of test and steps up to two miles for the first time – she is the outsider most likely to outrun her odds.

The Verdict: Si White to get the Prescott-Morris night off to a winning start.

6.10 Hyatt Inclusive Handicap (Class 5, 5f6y)

No (Draw) Horse Jockey Trainer Form Odds
6 (4) Sunlit Sea Luke Morris Sir Mark Prescott 7-8411 7/4
2 (2) Guernsey Lady J F Egan David Evans 347-32 7/2
1 (3) Carefree Dream Taylor Fisher J S Moore 052246 9/2
5 (6) Go Lockers Go Ross Coakley Michael Bell 112258 5/1
3 (1) Arctic Wind Callum Hutchinson David Evans 63-337 6/1
4 (5) Wyle Cop Jason Watson Jack Jones 009355 12/1

The Favourites: Sunlit Sea is the one they all have to beat at 7/4. The Prescott filly has won her last two on turf from the front and reverts to the all-weather just 3lb higher than her Thirsk success.

The Value: Guernsey Lady at 7/2 has been placed on both starts since returning from a break and David Evans knows how to place a sprinter.

The Verdict: Sunlit Sea – leg two of the potential treble.

6.40 Bay Gardens Handicap (Class 6, 1m5f)

No (Draw) Horse Jockey Trainer Form Odds
4 (2) Halimede Luke Morris Sir Mark Prescott 9881 5/6
2 (5) Shopaholic Jason Watson Jack Jones 5792 5/1
6 (7) Darkest Red Pat Cosgrave Jim Boyle -62224 5/1
1 (3) V Power Zoe Lewis Thomas Faulkner 613515 6/1
3 (6) Artavian Joe Leavy Patrick Chamings 92-736 16/1
7 (1) Cospicua George Wood James Tate 715166 16/1
5 (4) Parc Dosne Kyle McHugh Matt Crawley 645 20/1

The Favourites: Halimede is the banker of the card at 5/6. She surged clear on her handicap debut at Catterick on Tuesday and, quickly turned out under a penalty, she is the most-tipped horse at the meeting – nap material for a fistful of national newspaper tipsters.

The Value: Darkest Red at 5/1 is a model of consistency without winning and this drop to Class 6 gives him every chance of finally breaking through.

The Verdict: Halimede completes what could be a famous Prescott-Morris treble.

7.10 Calabash Cove EBF Fillies’ Restricted Novice Stakes (Class 4, 1m1y)

No (Draw) Horse Jockey Trainer Form Odds
3 (7) Kanzi Callum Shepherd Charlie Johnston 2 10/11
5 (4) Ozone Friendly Harry Davies James Owen – 3/1
6 (6) Saffron Bay Rob Hornby Charles Hills – 100/30
1 (5) Amethyst Star Callum Hutchinson Eve Johnson Houghton 70 16/1
2 (3) Chaise Longue Jason Watson Ed Dunlop 8 20/1
7 (1) Senorita Luna Benoit De La Sayette Marco Botti 7 25/1

Non-runner: Norfolk Dream.

The Favourites: Kanzi sets the standard at 10/11 after travelling strongly when second on her Ayr debut last month. Experience counts for plenty in these restricted novices.

The Value: The newcomers are interesting – James Owen’s Ozone Friendly (3/1) hails from a yard whose debutants always demand respect, while Charles Hills sends Saffron Bay (100/30) on a long journey south.

The Verdict: Kanzi to make her experience tell, though she is no wagering proposition at cramped odds against unraced rivals.

7.40 Hewanorra Handicap (Class 4, 7f1y)

No (Draw) Horse Jockey Trainer Form Odds
1 (6) Huscal Jason Watson Charles Hills -08432 6/4
4 (2) Arantes Nascimento Benoit De La Sayette Michael Attwater 271226 4/1
5 (1) Tattie Bogle Callum Shepherd Charlie Johnston 321272 11/2
6 (4) Red Hat Eagle Taylor Fisher William Knight 575547 7/1
3 (3) Rogue Supremacy Luke Morris Archie Watson 387559 8/1
7 (5) Bold Suitor Georgia Dobie Craig Benton 3-4215 9/1
2 (7) Port Road Harry Davies Simon Dow -16180 10/1

The Favourites: Huscal, the classiest horse on the card off a mark of 81, is 6/4 favourite in the night’s feature. He has been placed on his last two starts and this switch back to Polytrack looks the day the penny drops.

The Value: Arantes Nascimento (4/1) won on this surface in April and has kept his form on turf since; Tattie Bogle (11/2) is another in-form four-year-old to fear.

The Verdict: Huscal gets the vote, with Arantes Nascimento the each-way alternative.

8.10 Rodney Bay Classified Stakes (Class 6, 6f1y)

No (Draw) Horse Jockey Trainer Form Odds
1 (5) A Lott Of Kane Joey Haynes Chelsea Banham 921451 5/4
6 (3) Just King High Callum Shepherd Ross Burdon 289456 5/1
8 (2) Roman Spring Joe Leavy Rachel Cook & John Bridger 607304 13/2
4 (1) Henry Tudor Luke Morris Mark Hoad 919987 8/1
5 (10) Horus James Glennon Michael Attwater -64976 8/1
3 (8) Edergole’s Gift George Wood Conrad Allen 630695 10/1
2 (6) Dr Ali Jonny Peate J R Jenkins 216657 12/1
9 (7) Music And Song J F Egan David Flood 960458 25/1

Plus two others: Rainbow Sorbet (33/1) and Paint Your Palette (25/1).

The Favourites: A Lott Of Kane is a warm order at 5/4 after a career-best win at Wolverhampton last week. Wind surgery has clearly worked the oracle and the step back up to six furlongs suits.

The Value: Roman Spring (13/2) has been running to a fair level in better races than this and is the chief threat for the shrewd Cook-Bridger partnership.

The Verdict: A Lott Of Kane to sign off the card in front.

Accumulator

Our four-fold from the evening card: Sunlit Sea (6.10) – Halimede (6.40) – Huscal (7.40) – A Lott Of Kane (8.10). At current prices that pays around 27/1 – a tidy return from four short-priced fancies on a night when the form horses look hard to oppose.

Racing continues across the country all afternoon before Lingfield takes over – see our Newmarket preview for the Sweet Solera card. Odds correct at time of writing.
