Christophe Soumillon Ban Cut To Five Days After Royal Ascot Appeal

Christophe Soumillon has had his Royal Ascot suspension reduced from eight days to five after an independent disciplinary panel reviewed his ride on Puerto Rico in the St James’s Palace Stakes.

The Belgian jockey was sanctioned after stewards found he had ridden the Aidan O’Brien-trained Puerto Rico in a way that benefited stablemate Gstaad, who finished second to Bow Echo at Ascot.

Panel Finds Benefit But Not Intent

The appeal did not fully clear Soumillon. The panel found Puerto Rico’s movement away from the rail did give Gstaad an advantage, but it was not satisfied that Soumillon intended to help Ryan Moore’s mount.

That distinction changed the punishment. According to Sky Sports Racing’s report on the appeal, the case was treated as interference aggravated by the benefit to a stablemate rather than a deliberate team-tactics offence.

The ruling still leaves a mark on one of Royal Ascot’s most debated races. Soumillon, Puerto Rico, Gstaad, Ryan Moore and Aidan O’Brien were all central to the original inquiry, which came after Gstaad was beaten a short head in the Group 1 mile contest.

For Soumillon, the practical outcome is a shorter suspension. For British racing, the judgement keeps the finding of a rules breach in place while narrowing the allegation that had made the episode so explosive.
