Jose C. Ferrer is set to return to Monmouth Park on Saturday after two years riding year-round in Florida, with the 62-year-old jockey chasing 4,900 career wins on the way to a possible 5,000-win milestone.
Ferrer has been listed for five rides on the Saturday card at the New Jersey track, where his US riding career began in 1982. The move was confirmed in a Monmouth Park announcement, with the veteran returning after spending recent seasons at Tampa Bay Downs and Gulfstream Park.
Ferrer resumes at the Jersey Shore
The Puerto Rico-born rider heads back to Monmouth with 4,863 career victories and a clear short-term target of reaching 4,900 before the wider 5,000-win chase comes fully into view.
Only 38 North American jockeys have reached 5,000 wins, underlining the scale of the landmark now on Ferrer’s horizon.
Ferrer won the Monmouth Park riding title in 2019 and finished in the track’s top 10 rider standings every year from 2013 to 2023. He also returned for one weekend in 2024 before staying in Florida for family reasons.
The 2018 George Woolf Memorial Award winner is expected to remain at Monmouth through the end of the meet, which runs until September 13.
His longer-term plans already include attending the Racing Officials Accreditation Program in Lexington after the meeting, with stewarding a possible post-riding path.
The return gives Monmouth another familiar name during its summer run towards Haskell weekend.
