Scandinavia Looks Rock Solid In Ascot Gold Cup

Last season’s St Leger winner Scandinavia looks a rock solid option in the Ascot Gold Cup.

With doubts that last year’s winner Trawlerman could miss the race, the classy four-year-old is the most likely winner.

NINE of Aidan O’Brien’s Royal Ascot winners have came in the Gold Cup, a contest he has had supreme luck in.

He won it with Yeats four times on the bounce from 2006-09 and also landed it with Kyprios twice in 2022 and 2024.

It’s a race O’Brien loves and his St Leger winner from last year looks tailor made for this.

Scandinavia has proved his pure class and versatility on different grounds and different trips, and 2m4f certainly looks worth exploring.

He’s won over 1m2f, 1m5f, 2m and three times over 1m6f. The son of Justify is an out and out stayer and has already won twice this season.

He returned from a 224-day break to win a Listed contest at Navan and followed up last month with a win in a Leopardstown Group 3.

This should be up his street and he could well be one of the Royal Ascot bankers.

Rahiebb Should Relish Gold Cup Test

After his second behind the favourite in last year’s St Leger (see above), I always thought that RAHIEEB shaped like a Gold Cup horse.

He may have only won twice from eight career starts but it was a fine effort in defeat at Doncaster last season behind Scandinavia and he was massively impressive in the Yorkshire Cup on his seasonal return.

1m6f suited perfectly last month at York and he won that with ease, so the Gold Cup trip could bring out even more improvement.

Trainer Roger Varian thrives with these types and he’s got a bright future ahead of him.

Looks like he could be an interesting alternative if wanting to take on the favourite.

There’s also Caballo De Mar in the race, who Oisin Murphy is looking forward to riding for George Scott.
