How Many 1000 Guineas Winners Also Won The Epsom Oaks?

Winning any English Classic is a tough ask in itself, but winning two in one season is even harder, so how many 1000 Guineas winners have also won the Epsom Oaks?

Only THREE Fillies Have Completed The 1000 Guineas & Epsom Oaks Double Since 2000

Similarly to horses that won the 2000 Guineas and Epsom Derby, it’s been harder to do it in the 21st century, with so much competition.

There has only been THREE horses to do the 1000 Guineas and Epsom Oaks double since 2000 – with the last being LOVE in 2020.

Love was an easy winner of the 1000 Guineas in 2020 and followed that win up with an even easier success in the Epsom Oaks the following month.

The daughter of Galileo will always be remembered as one of O’Brien’s greatest ever fillies.

Another amazing filly of O’Brien’s was MINDING, who also completed the famous double.

Minding was also a daughter of Galileo, and did the double in 2016. And she very nearly won the Irish 1000 Guineas too, but lost out by a head after going off 4/11 favourite.

She would win a further three Group 1s as a three-year-old after the Oaks.

The only other horse to achieve the 1000 Guineas and Oaks double in the 21st century is KAZZIA, who was owned by Godolphin.

Saeed bin Suroor’s filly won the 1000 Guineas on her first start for the stable after switching from a German yard.

She would then win the Epsom Oaks just under a month later, ridden by Frankie Dettori again.

With just three horses winning the double in the 21st century, it just goes to show how tough it actually is.

Records before the 2000’s have often been inaccurate and are also not relevant now, so we will focus on those in the 21st century.

Which Horse Is The Most Likely 1000 Guineas & Epsom Oaks Double Winner?

To be honest, the 1000 Guineas this season doesn’t look like a vintage renewal. However, if anyone is going to achieve the double then it might be Aidan O’Brien.

O’Brien has won the 1000 Guineas seven times. Two of those winners in Minding and Love went on to win the double, so it could be worth looking at what he saddles for the race this year.

PRECISE seems to be the only Ballydoyle representative in the 1000 Guineas this season after O’Brien’s most recent comments.

She was winner of the Fillies Mile over course and distance last year and is open to any kind of improvement.

O’Brien said at the end of last season that she could be absolutely anything as a three-year-old, so could she be another Love or Minding?

Find out on Sunday, and also check out the 1000 Guineas trends from Andy Newton.
