With the first Classic of the season taking place at Newmarket this weekend, many may be wondering…How many 2000 Guineas winners have won the Epsom Derby?
Camelot Was The Last Horse To Win The 2000 Guineas & Epsom Derby
There has been just four horses since 1970 that have completed the 2000 Guineas and Epsom Derby double – not as many as you’d think.
Before 1970, there was plenty that completed the double, but horses and records from the 1920’s and 1800’s are barely relevant now.
Contrary to what people may believe, the 2000 Guineas hasn’t been the best Derby trial in recent years really – but some that did run in the Guineas have won the Derby. It’s a hard feat, as the records suggest.
But the last WINNER of the 2000 Guineas to win the Epsom Derby was CAMELOT in 2012. Aidan O’Brien’s horse only won the Guineas by a neck, but was a five-length winner of the Epsom Derby the following month.

He would also win the Irish Derby with ease, but just missed out on the Triple Crown when coming second in the St Leger. Camelot will always be known as one of Aidan O’Brien’s greatest 2000 Guineas winners, given what happened afterwards.
Two years prior to that, another hugely influential stallion of today in SEA THE STARS achieved the Guineas/Derby double – but didn’t take his place in the St Leger.
Following his 2000 Guineas win, Sea the Stars would win a further FIVE Group 1s as a three-year-old – including the Arc de Triomph, etching his name in the history books as one of the greatest horses of all time.
Sea the Stars was the first horse to win both the 2000 Guineas and Epsom Derby since Nashwan in 1989.

King’s Trail Is Only Horse In Guineas With A Sire That Completed The Double
Interestingly, King’s Trail, who is owned by Godolphin is the only horse with a Guineas/Derby-winning pedigree, being a son of Sea the Stars.
Sea the Stars completed the famous double in 2009, so could King’s Trail be a lively outsider? He looks to be Godolphin’s second string with the well fancied Distant Storm shorter in the betting.
