The Bet365 Gold Cup Favorite’s Curse: Just One Outright Winner Since 1991
For the traditionalists among us, this race will always be “The Whitbread” – a name it carried under that iconic sponsorship from 1957 until 2001.
Today, leading bookmaker bet365 holds the reins, and they’ve truly made the event their own since taking over in 2008.
Over the decades, the 3m 4 1/2f race has developed some incredibly reliable patterns.
Which could help when trying to find the winner.
The most glaring? The dismal record of market leaders.
Believe it or not, we went over thirty years seeing only one outright favorite cross the line first – the legendary Mr Frisk back in 1990.
That long, lean spell finally broke in 2023 when Kitty’s Light (pictured) justified his 11/4 price tag to the delight of punters.

Now, technically, we have seen joint-favorites win (Docklands Express in 1991 and Beau in 2000).
However, the fact remains – in 35 years, only one horse has stood alone at the top of the betting and actually delivered.
This bet365 Gold Cup trend has been a goldmine for the bookies.
This year, the target is on the back of the Gary & Josh Moore-trained Havaila, who was last seen winning the Sussex National at Plumpton.
He’s the likely favorite (just), but can he defy decades of history?
Don’t Panic: The Average Winner is Still Only 10/1
While favorites often struggle, that doesn’t mean you should be hunting for 100/1 longshots.
The stats show that 16 of the last 22 winners were priced at 14/1 or shorter, and 64% came from the top seven in the betting.
Essentially, the winner is usually hiding in plain sight.
SIX of the last seven winners were 12/1 or less, and while the average starting price since 2003 sits at 10.5/1.
All backed up again last year in 2025, when the winner Resplendent Grey SP’d at 9/2.
DID YOU KNOW? Even the giants of the Flat get involved here. Leading Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien actually won this race in 1996 with Life Of a Lord.
The Age Factor: 82% of Winners are Aged 7–9
If you’re looking for a simple way to prune your shortlist, look at the age next.
A staggering 18 of the last 22 winners fell into the 7-to-9-year-old bracket – with last year’s winner aged 7.
Every single one of the last 12 winners has ticked this box; you have to go back to Tidal Bay in 2012 to find a winner outside this range.
While ALL of the last SEVEN winners of the race were aged 7 or 8.
Last year’s winner Resplendent Grey will be back aged – but also rated 10lbs higher this time.
He’ll be aiming to be the first ‘back-to-back’ winner since Topsham Bay in the early 90s.

Can Willie Mullins Follow-up His 2024 bet365 Gold Cup Win?
While Fulke Walwyn holds the all-time record with seven wins, Paul Nicholls is the king of the modern era with four trophies.
He first struck with Ad Hoc (2001 & 2003) and most recently with Just A Par in 2015. This year, however, the Ditcheat handler doesn’t have a runner.
All eyes will be on Willie Mullins though – after winning his first Gold Cup in 2024 he’ll be a popular pick to add another.
He could send over Road To Home, who was pulled out of last weekend’s Scottish Grand National late on.
This 7yold ticks the key bet365 Gold Cup age trend too and was last seen running a close second in the Kim Muir at the Cheltenham Festival (watch below).
Sean Bowen: The Jockey For The Big Occasion
Keep a close eye on champion jump jockey Sean Bowen.
As he comes to Sandown with a brilliant record in this race.
He’s already won it three times —once for Nicholls on Just A Par and once for his father, Peter Bowen, on Henllan Harri.
Plus, he also took the prize in 2025 on the Olly Murphy-trained Resplendent Grey, who he’s expected to partner again.
Bowen will be looking to become the first jockey to win the bet365 Gold Cup ‘back-to-back’ since Ron Barry in 1973-74.
Oh and with Barry the winning-most rider in the race (3 wins), another win for Bowen on Saturday will see him overtake him.
