Grand National Result 2026: I Am Maximus Becomes First Horse To Regain The National Since Red Rum

The 2026 Grand National result saw the Willie Mullins-trained I AM MAXIMUS land the world-famous Aintree contest – becoming the first horse to regain the race since Red Rum in 1977.

Grand National Result 2026: I Am Maximus Lands His Second Aintree Success 🤍💚💛

The 2026 Grand National result saw the 2024 winner and 2025 runner-up I AM MAXIMUS regain his Aintree crown.

And in the process cement his place in the National hall-of-fame as one of the greats of the race.

He was heavily backed in the minutes leading up to the big Aintree race, with punters sending the JP McManus runner as the 9/2 Grand National favourite.

In his third run in the National, I Am Maximus was back rated 168, which was 9lbs higher than his win in 2024 and a pound higher than when runner-up to Nick Rockett in 2025.

His win also saw a stack of National records broken.

I Am Maximus The First Horse To Regain The National Since Red Rum

Including I Am Maximus becoming the first horse since Red Rum in 1977 to regain the race.

The 10yold also became the first horse – again since Red Rum (12st, 1974) – to carry 11st 12st or more to victory.

Next up was his trainer Willie Mullins, who was winning this fourth National and his third in-a-row. Becoming the first handler to win three on the bounce since Vincent O’Brien in the 1950’s.

Mullins also now joins Ginger McCain and Fred Rimell as the winning-most trainer in the race (4 wins).

His owner – JP McManus – was also landing his fourth Grand National and is now the winning-most owner in the history of the race.

Plus McManus was also responsible for the second Iroko and fourth Johnnywho.

He’ll be aged 11 next season and is sure to be aimed at the race again as he looks to join Red Rum on three wins.

It will be a brave punter that says I AM MAXIMUS can’t be a Grand National ‘gladiator’ again in 2027.
