Grand National Bandwagon Heads North Of The Border To Ayr In Scotland

Hot on the heels of the Aintree Grand National comes the Scottish Grand National – which is run a week later on Saturday 18th April and will see another ultra-competitive field line-up at Ayr for the £100k prize.

We’ve had the Welsh, Irish and English Grand Nationals – not to mention a whole host of other slightly smaller ‘National-titled’ races.

But the last of the main marathon races this season is the Scottish Grand National on Saturday 18th April.

The Ayr race will be run exactly as week after the big Aintree race, but carries just shy of £400k less than the winning Grand National prize money.

We can expect another ultra-competitive field to head to post – a race top Irish trainer Willie Mullins has won for the last two years.

While Welsh handler Christian Williams also has a good recent record in the race, with two wins since 2022.

Who Is The Scottish Grand National Favourite?

Recent Kim Muir Chase 4th Kim Rogue is the Scottish Grand National favourite – but only just and a lot can change between now and the race.

He’s trained by Irish handler Joseph O’Brien, who is yet to win the Ayr race.

Just behind Kim Roque in the market is the Lucinda Russell & Michael Scudamore-trained King Of Answers.

He was also last in action at the Cheltenham Festival in March, when second in the NH Hunt Chase on the opening day.

Lucinda Russell won the Scottish National in 2021 with Mighty Thunder – her sole win in the race.

But her partner and former top jockey Peter Scudamore has two wins in the race when riding – Captain Dibble (1992) and Little Polveir (1987).
