Haydock Apprentice Result: Home Hero Storms Clear as Suggy Fades

Home Hero won the 5:10 Betway Apprentice Handicap at Haydock at 7/2, powering two and three-quarter lengths clear under Luke Catton for Hugo Palmer as the well-backed favourite Suggy came home only fourth.

1st Home Hero Luke Catton 7/2
2nd Sunshine And Roses Rose Dawes 11/1
3rd Sandy Craic C J Whiteley (3) 3/1

Six ran over the extended seven furlongs after Director’s Cut and Forever Endless were taken out, and the winner stopped the clock in 1m 41.09s.

The Race Story

Catton rode a confident race, pressing the leader three furlongs out and taking over soon after. Home Hero carried his head awkwardly when ridden inside the final quarter-mile but the response was emphatic, the gelding going clear inside the last furlong to win comfortably.

Sunshine And Roses ran well above her 11/1 price in second for Rose Dawes, with Sandy Craic a further three-quarters of a length back in third. Suggy, 13/8 in the morning and 5/2 favourite at the off, travelled into contention but faded inside the final furlong; Phantom Watch was fifth.

Tipster Accountability

Our Haydock preview sided with Suggy in this closer, and he was beaten fair and square — a miss to end the card. The preview’s day still had its highlight in banker Sallaal in the Rose of Lancaster, but the four-fold acca died when Moonshine refused to race in the 3:34. None of the tracked tipsters in today’s tipster review had a runner here.

Looking Ahead

That concludes a dramatic day at Haydock which began with an 80/1 shock from Lc Tiffen and ended with Arctic Thunder taking the Capital City Handicap before Home Hero’s romp. The northern action continues this evening at Ayr, where Ladies Day runs through to 8:30, and our full results service rolls on.
