The gentle route back to the autumn Group 1s hit a pothole. Fallen Angel, the five-time Group 1 winner sent off 11/8 favourite for the 3:00 Irish Stallion Farms EBF Dick Hern Stakes at Haydock, was run out of a Listed race she was supposed to win on the bridle — beaten into third by 13/2 chance Calendar Girl, who provided Owen Burrows and Callum Rodriguez with the biggest result of the meeting so far.
| Pos | Horse | Jockey | SP |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | Calendar Girl | Callum Rodriguez | 13/2 |
| 2nd | Pacific Mission | Colin Keane | 12/1 |
| 3rd | Fallen Angel | James Doyle | 11/8 F |
The Race Story
Back at her best trip after failing to see out the Middleton’s mile and a quarter, Fallen Angel led narrowly three furlongs out and, for a stride or two, the script held. Then it didn’t: headed over a furlong from home, Karl Burke’s mare found nothing in the final 110 yards, and Calendar Girl swept past to win by a length and a quarter from Pacific Mission in 1m 38.52s. Royal Ascot winner Alobayyah, slowly away and hanging left, trailed home seventh, with 28/1 each-way angle Silenciosa setting the early pace before fading to tenth.
Tipster Accountability
A bruising race for the morning preview, which called Fallen Angel “hard to oppose back at a mile” and put up Silenciosa as the 28/1 value — both beaten, though the preview’s eye for the Colin Keane booking on Pacific Mission (“catches the eye”) at least found the runner-up. Sallaal’s Rose of Lancaster win keeps Haydock honours even. Ledger tipster involvement lands in Sunday’s settling.
Looking Ahead
Haydock turns to handicaps: the 3:34 Ashton Heath over seven furlongs, then the 4:09 for the three-year-olds. After two ITV features that produced a 1/2 banker and an 11/8 turnover, the afternoon has already covered every outcome.
