Sallaal Wins Rose of Lancaster Stakes as the Fairytale Rolls On

Sallaal passed his Group-race examination after all. The 1/2 favourite took the 2:25 Betway Rose of Lancaster Stakes (Group 3) at Haydock by a length and three-quarters, keeping one of the season’s best stories — and this morning’s banker call — firmly on track.

The Race Story

With Danger Bay a non-runner (girth gall), only four went to post, and the shape of the race tested the Frankel gelding’s temperament as much as his talent. Sallaal took a keen hold early, was shuffled out of second on the turn, then travelled back into the argument two furlongs out before Ray Dawson asked the question. The response was emphatic enough: he led inside the final furlong and ran on, clocking 2m 10.91s on ground riding slower than standard.

Sea Scout ran a career-best for the Crisfords in second, with Nahraan a half-step short of her Gosden stable’s hopes in third and John Porter winner Convergent tailed off. For Roger Varian, whose Epsom handicap romp with this horse was rated one of the century’s best by Timeform, the autumn plan — Bahrain in November — just got more real.

Tipster Accountability

The Haydock preview called Sallaal “the meeting’s banker” at 4/6 this morning, and he obliged at a half. It steadies the ship after 80/1 shot Lc Tiffen torpedoed the Leigh Handicap opener. Whether any of the tracked ledger tipsters were on will be settled in Stephen James’s Sunday review; ITV-race naps tend to cluster here, so expect movement.

Looking Ahead

Haydock’s afternoon continues with the 3:34 Ashton Heath Handicap over seven furlongs, before attention swings back to the sprinters. The Dick Hern Stakes at 3:00 — where five-time Group 1 winner Fallen Angel was sent off at long odds-on to beat Alobayyah — gets its own result article shortly.
