Ayr Ladies Day Handicap Result: Pol Roger Shocks Tiger at 20/1

Pol Roger won the 6:30 Book Ladbrokes Ayr Gold Cup Ladies Day Handicap at 20/1, denying the night’s banker Tiger by a neck under Sean Kirrane for Michael Dods — the shock of the evening at Ayr.

1st Pol Roger Sean Kirrane 20/1
2nd Tiger Ryan Kavanagh 6/5F
3rd Faeberon Dougie Costello 22/1

Thirteen went to post for the mile-and-a-quarter Class 5 contest after Annandale’s withdrawal, with 22/1 chance Faeberon two and a quarter lengths back in third on ground good, good to soft in places.

The Race Story

The Ladies Day crowd came to cheer home a good thing and went home telling a harder-luck story. Tiger, a Chester winner only last Sunday and 10/11 in the morning to defy a penalty for the red-hot Ian Williams yard, eased to 6/5 at the off and simply found one gutsier on the night. Pol Roger, an 18/1 morning price who had shown next to nothing in two starts this season, was produced late by Kirrane and outfought the favourite in a driving finish, holding on by a neck where it mattered. For Dods, whose stable stalwart had been sliding down the handicap all summer, it was a raid worth the trip; for Tiger’s backers, a neck has rarely felt so long.

Tipster Accountability

This one stings. Our Ayr preview called Tiger “the acca anchor” and the banker on the card — and the anchor has now sunk the lot: the 60/1 four-timer died in the opener, and the fallback Tiger–Wicklow Way double is dead with it. The each-way saver Phantom Shadow missed the frame too. None of the tracked tipsters in today’s tipster review were involved.

Looking Ahead

The 7:00 Unite Ewing Hope’s Happy Retirement Handicap is the most valuable race on the card, where course specialist Jannas Journey — five wins from eight starts at Ayr — was our 13/2 each-way fancy against the David O’Meara pair. Our result follows shortly. Earlier, South Parade took the 6:00 at 9/2.
