Paco Lopez has been handed a 30-day suspension by the New York State Gaming Commission after the four-horse spill that marred the Wild Applause Stakes on Saratoga’s opening day.
The ruling, reported by Thoroughbred Daily News, cites gross careless riding in the eighth race at Saratoga on 3 July, when Lopez’s mount I Love Giraffes clipped heels with Pillar Of Beauty and fell.
Lovely Grey, Paris Carver and Smexy also came down in the chain-reaction incident. I Love Giraffes suffered a broken hip, while the other three horses were not seriously injured. Lopez has appealed the ruling and has been granted a stay.
Castellano setback sharpens Saratoga impact
The wider consequence is not limited to Lopez’s suspension notice. Javier Castellano, aboard Paris Carver, is expected to miss about three weeks with a minor lower back injury, with a possible return date of 29 July.
The incident came in the first stakes race of the Saratoga meet, making the penalty especially visible on one of the sport’s most scrutinised summer stages.
That timing matters at Saratoga, where early-meet momentum can define rides for the summer’s major targets. Lopez remains named on upcoming mounts while the appeal process begins, but the sanction puts another disciplinary episode around one of America’s highest-profile riders back at the centre of the safety debate.
