Phileas Fogg made a Saratoga statement on Saturday as Kendrick Carmouche sent Gustavo Rodriguez’s gelding straight to the lead and never saw another rival in a 10-length Grade 2 Suburban Stakes repeat.
The Jupiter Stable runner defended his crown in the $500,000 Suburban presented by Subourbon Life, turning last year’s head victory over Antiquarian into a far more emphatic front-running display at Saratoga Race Course.
Carmouche broke sharply from post six, angled to the rail and controlled fractions of 23.93 and 48.59 seconds before Phileas Fogg cleared away. Hit Show, the Grade 1 Dubai World Cup winner, finished second, with Tiztastic third.
Rodriguez Eyes Next Step After Millionaire Milestone
The win was worth $275,000 and lifted Phileas Fogg to $1,170,373 in career earnings, a significant marker for a six-year-old who has become a durable top-level operator for Rodriguez.
Rodriguez told NYRA’s official Saratoga report that the horse had been training better than before last year’s Suburban, though even he did not expect such a decisive margin.
The immediate question is whether connections now take in the Grade 1 Whitney Stakes on 8 August. Rodriguez indicated they would wait and see, but a repeat Suburban winner who can dominate proven older horses from the front has forced himself into that conversation, especially after turning a deep older-horse race into a procession.
