Horse racing legend Frankie Dettori has been taken to hospital after being involved in a serious car accident in Newmarket, the headquarters of British racing.
The former champion jockey, 55, was injured in the crash on the evening of Wednesday, July 1, with his management team later confirming he is receiving treatment in hospital after suffering multiple injuries.
According to reports, another vehicle struck the rear passenger side of the car Dettori was travelling in, causing it to spin before overturning.
Emergency services were quickly on the scene and Dettori was taken to a nearby hospital, where doctors are continuing to assess his condition.
Thank you, everyone, for your kind messages and support. A huge thank you as well to the fantastic emergency staff who looked after me.
I'm very sore and have a few broken ribs, so I'll be taking some time to rest and recover. I look forward to seeing you all again soon.… pic.twitter.com/OnXGSnXPqT

Frankie Dettori Suffers Broken Ribs and Broken Thumb
Medical staff have confirmed the Italian racing icon sustained several broken ribs and a broken thumb in the accident.
He remains under close observation while doctors carry out further scans to establish the full extent of his injuries, although there has been no indication that the injuries are life-threatening.
In a statement released through H Talent Management, Dettori thanked those who came to his aid.
“Frankie would like to thank the emergency services who attended the scene, together with the doctors, nurses and wider medical team caring for him. His focus is now on resting and recovering. H Talent Management respectfully asks that Frankie’s privacy is respected at this time. No further comment will be made until there is a meaningful update.”
The accident comes only a few months after Dettori officially announced his retirement in February following a farewell tour that included rides in both America and Brazil.
His final appearance on British soil remains one of the most memorable farewells the sport has witnessed, steering King Of Steel to victory in the Champion Stakes at Ascot three years ago before receiving an emotional send-off from racing fans.
Although retirement has suited the 55-year-old, he had already agreed to make a one-off return to the saddle in the charity Legends Race at Doncaster’s St Leger Festival.
With that race due to take place on Friday, September 11, 2026, his participation is now uncertain as his recovery understandably becomes the immediate priority.
Newmarket Has Been the Scene of Another Life-Changing Frankie Dettori Accident
For Dettori, the latest incident brings back memories of another terrifying accident in Newmarket that almost claimed his life.
On 1 June 2000, he survived one of the darkest days in British racing when a light aircraft carrying Dettori, fellow jockey Ray Cochrane and pilot Patrick Mackey crashed just seconds after taking off from Newmarket Racecourse.
The trio were flying to Goodwood for an afternoon of racing when the Piper Seneca failed to gain sufficient height, clipped the embankment at Devil’s Dyke and burst into flames.
Patrick Mackey Tragically Lost His Life in the 2000 Plane Crash
Pilot Patrick Mackey was killed in the crash, while Dettori and Cochrane somehow escaped from the wreckage in what police later described as nothing short of a miracle.
Dettori suffered a broken right ankle, facial injuries and several other fractures that sidelined him for months.
Cochrane sustained burns and bruising but, despite his own injuries, managed to drag Dettori clear of the burning aircraft before making a desperate attempt to rescue Mackey.
The flames, however, were too fierce to reach the pilot. Cochrane’s extraordinary courage that day was later recognised with the Queen’s Commendation for Bravery.
The experience left an indelible mark on Dettori, who has since spoken candidly about believing those were his final moments as the aircraft came down.
In the years that followed, Dettori admitted the crash completely changed his outlook on life. It strengthened his appreciation for his family, gave him a fresh perspective away from racing and made every winner that followed feel even more special.
Remarkably, he returned to the saddle later that same season and went on to enjoy the greatest chapter of his career, adding more Classic victories, countless Royal Ascot winners and further cementing his place among the finest jockeys the sport has ever seen.
An investigation by the UK’s Air Accidents Investigation Branch was unable to identify one single cause of the crash. Investigators concluded the aircraft failed to climb properly after take-off before striking the embankment and crashing.
More than a quarter of a century later, the Newmarket plane crash remains one of the defining moments of Frankie Dettori’s extraordinary life. It is a powerful reminder of just how close racing came to losing one of its greatest-ever showmen, making news of his latest accident all the more sobering for the sport and its fans.
