Jørgen Damsbo Andersen has been elected chairman of Dansk Galop after Nick Elsass stepped down following more than 30 years in the role. The change, confirmed after a recent board meeting of Denmark’s racing authority, gives the organisation a new lead figure at a moment when European racing bodies are under pressure to modernise governance, welfare and funding structures.

Andersen joined Dansk Galop’s board in 2024 and arrives with international pharmaceutical-industry experience. Jens D. Lauritzen has also been confirmed as vice-chairman, giving the Danish authority a refreshed top table after one of the longest chairmanships in European racing administration.
Elsass Leaves A Major European Racing Legacy
Elsass’ exit is notable because his influence extended well beyond Dansk Galop. He remains chairman of Hesteafgiftsfonden, a vice-president of the European Federation of Thoroughbred Breeders’ Associations and a board member of the European Horse Network.
Andersen used his first public remarks to thank Elsass for his “tireless” support of equestrian sport, with Thoroughbred Daily News reporting that the outgoing chairman was credited with leaving a lasting mark on racing in Denmark.
For Dansk Galop, the immediate task is continuity: preserving Elsass’ institutional links while giving Andersen space to shape a modern brief for Danish racing, breeding and international representation.
The appointment also keeps Denmark’s governing voice in focus as smaller European jurisdictions compete for owners, breeders and commercial attention.
