Chester ITV Horse Racing Tips On Wednesday: O’Brien Unleashes Big Epsom Derby Hope

1:30 Chester – CAA Stellar Lily Agnes EBF Conditions Stakes (GBB Race) Cl2 (2yo) 5f ITV4

This will be a real burn-up and so on the tight turns of the Roodee the inside berth here is a big plus.

Backed up with 9 of the last 10 winners hailed from gates 5 or lower.

There are three drawn low that all won from up with the pace last time – Wait For Georgie, Adonius and Final Appeal.

But Adonius has to give 5lbs away, so that won’t be easy and I’m not sure the race Final Appeal won last time at Wolves was that strong.

So, WAIT GEORGIE, from gate 3, gets the call – with Oisin Murphy riding too.

He won well on debut at Bath last month and that form has been franked since with the third Bayside winning at Beverley next time.

This Mehmas colt blasted out and made all that day and hails from the Michael Owen and Hugo Palmer yard that love targeting this meeting.

Of those at a price the Tom Dascombe loves having winners here and took this in 2024, so this low-drawn Yahaira might be going under the radar after a poor first run.

🥇WAIT GEORGIE
🥈ADONIUS
🥉YAHAIRA

2:05 Chester – Join Ladbrokes Bet 5 Get 30 Earl Grosvenor Handicap Cl2 (4yo+ 0-105) 7½f ITV4

The Andrew Balding yard won this in 2021 and 2022, so their Snow Master is noted with Oisin Murphy riding.

While the Grant Tuer runner Bellarchi has done us a few favours already this season, so I can’t totally discount him. However, draw 11 makes life harder.

Solar Aclaim, Brighton Boy, Divine Libra and Al Shabab Storm are all course winner too.

But another is PERCY’S LAD, who actually won this race in 2024.

He missed all of 2025 on the sidelines but returned last month at Newmarket to blow away the cobwebs.

Yes, he might still be a bit rusty, but that run is sure to have brought him on and is back rated 5lbs lower than when winning this prize two seasons back.

Draw 6 is fine too and his overall at the oldest racecourse in Britain is solid – 1-3-5-2-1-4.

I’ll take Percy to be a ‘lad’ again on the Roodee.

🥇PERCY’S LAD
🥈SNOW MASTER
🥉BELLACHI

2:35 Chester – Weatherbys Cheshire Oaks (Listed Race) (Fillies) Cl1 (3yo) 1m3½f ITV4

Aidan O’Brien has won six of the last 10 runnings of the Cheshire Oaks, so it goes without saying his two runners Sugar Island and Amelia Earhart are respected.

The former (Sugar Island) is the higher-rated (106 to 99), but Ryan Moore, who has also ridden 60% of the last 10 winners – has decided to get the leg-up on Amelia Earhart.

She sports the first-time blinkers to and heads here having finally broken her duck at Leopardstown in a maiden last October by an easy 7 lengths.

However, this race produced the winner of the Epsom Oaks last season (Minnie Hauk).

And it could be more of the same with the Gosden runner I’M THE ONE propping up the betting for the fillies’ Classic early next month.

This Sea The Stars filly shot to the head of the Oaks market after a clear-cut win on debut at Newbury.

With more to come, she’s taken to live up to her name and remain unbeaten – then firm up further for the Oaks.

🥇I’M THE ONE
🥈AMELIA EARHART
🥉A LA PROCHAINE

  • 9/23 – Won by trainer Aidan O’Brien (6 of the last 10)
  • 7/23 – Ridden by Ryan Moore (6 of the last 10)

3:05 Chester – Boodles Chester Vase Stakes (Group 3) (Colts & Geldings) Cl1 (3yo) 1m4½f ITV4

Another race the Aidan O’Brien yard have a top record in – winning 8 of the last 12 – with Ryan Moore on 7 of the last 11 winners.

They also used this contest last season to prep their latest Epsom Derby winner Lambourn and history could easily repeat itself with BENVENUTO CELLINI a big player here.

He’s already as low as 6/1 for the Derby next month and heads here off the back of a fair 3rd in the G1 Futurity Trophy Stakes at Doncaster back in October.

That came on heavy ground over a mile, but this Frankel colt is expected to be much better suited by the less testing ground and more importantly – the step up in trip.

Ryan Moore actually rides him for the first time, while the 5th in that Donny race Oxagon has come out and won the Craven Stakes this season.

Of the rest, he probably has most to fear from Water To Wine for the Gosden team. He won well on debut at Newbury last month over 1m3f and could be anything.

But does lack the experience of the pick at this stage of his career and that is taken to be the difference.

🥇BENVENUTO CELLINI
🥈WATER TO WINE
🥉PROPOSITION

Key Stats 📈

  • 22/23 – 9/1 or shorter in the betting
  • 20/23 – Third or better last time out
  • 19/23 – Had a previous run that season
  • 16/23 – Went onto finish 8th or better in the Epsom Derby
  • 16/23 – Favourites that finished 1st or 2nd in this race
  • 12/23 – Didn’t win their previous race
  • 11/23 – Came from stalls 1 or 2
  • 11/23 – Trained by Aidan O’Brien (8 of last 12 winners)
  • 10/23 – Winning favourites
  • 9/23 – Ridden by Ryan Moore (7 of last 11 winners)
  • 7 of the last 11 winners from stalls 3 or lower
  • Ryan Moore and Aidan O’Brien have won 6 of the last 11
  • Just two winners in the last 23 years went onto win the Epsom Derby winner (2025, Lambourn 2013 and Ruler Of The World)

3:40 – Chester American Holidays Handicap Cl3 (3yo 0-90) 6f ITV4

We’ve only seen one winner from stall 1 in the last 14 runnings – so the first of three Hugo Palmer runners – Ruby’s Angel has that to overcome.

While 10 of the last 14 winners hailed from gates 4+ and we’ve only seen 3 winning favourites in the last 14 too, which might be good if you are looking to take on Alaminos.

So, a chance is taken on the next Hugo Palmer runner TRICKY TEL, who is back from being gelded and also has a top record here at Chester.

He’s run here twice and won both times – and these also both came last May.

Including winning at this fixture (Thursday) 12 months ago.

Yes, he lost his way a bit after those wins, but with a break and having ‘the snip’ there is every chance a return to the Roodee could spark him back to life.

Oh, and the Palmer camp also won this race in 2022, so their other runner WATCHA SNOOP is also noted from gate 6.

It could easily be a Palmer 1-2-3 here – dream stuff for the Michael Owen-backed yard.

🥇TRICKY TEL (e/w)
🥈WATCHA SNOOP
🥉RUBY’S ANGEL
