Cheltenham Festival 2026: ‘Lucky’ Racecard Number That Produced a Staggering Return

Over the Cheltenham Festival, punters will have many ways of picking a horse to bet on – follow a tipster, study the form, their favourite jockeys/trainers – or even the old trusted method of backing your best-loved colours.

However, with all the results settled and after some number-crunching – then ahead of the 2027 Cheltenham Festival, what about just backing ALL the NUMBER 7 horses?

Why?

Well, lucky number 7 popped up in the winners’ enclosure a massive FIVE times, including producing 18/1 and 20/1 winners – both with links to the name John!!

Oh, and we also reveal the Cheltenham racecard winning number range that won 50% of the races.

Cheltenham Festival 2026: Lucky Number 7 Wins 18% Of The Races 🎉

It’s no secret that for a lot of people NUMBER 7 is considered a lucky digit.

This is believed to be due to its deep historical, religious and even cultural significance – with some saying it symbolises perfection or a spiritual insight.

Anyway, enough of all that ‘mumbo jumbo’ – for me, you either like the number or not.

But for those that do have a soft spot for the number 7 – it was certainly  ‘happy days’ at the recent 2026 Cheltenham Festival.

With FIVE of the 28 winners sporting the SEVEN saddlecloth – meaning this number won 18% of the 28 races.

It was also the winning-most Cheltenham Festival racecard number in 2026, with number 9 hot on its heels with four wins.

The other plus was two of these five ‘number 7’ winners – Johnnywho (18/1) and Johnny’s Jury (20/1) – returned at cracking prices.

So anyone called John that also likes number 7, had no excuses NOT to be laughing all the way to the bank!

Cheltenham Festival Winning Number 7’s

  • Kargese (7/1)
  • Johnnywho (18/1)
  • Wodhooh (5/6)
  • Supremely West (10/3)
  • Johnny’s Jury (20/1)
  • Profit: +26.16pts

With 28pts staked and a return of 54.16pts – meaning +26.16pts banked.

50% Of The 2026 Cheltenham Festival Winners Had Racecard Numbers Between 6-10 😮

On day one of the 2026 Cheltenham Festival, remarkably – ALL seven Tuesday winners had racecard numbers between just 7-10.

Meaning only FOUR difference saddlecloth numbers collected, with numbers 7 (2) and 9 (3) cashing in with FIVE wins between them.

And this theme, pretty much continued across the rest of the Festival

As over the whole meeting – it might be interesting to know (or not) – that 50% of the winners came from just the 6-10 range.

Why Did Horses Numbered 6-10 Do Best At The 2026 Cheltenham Festival?

In short, who knows.

It might just be one of those things – and it’s certainly not going to be the ‘holy grail’ to find ongoing winners at future Cheltenham Festivals.

As, when looking back to the 2025 meeting, there were only TWO winning number 7’s.

However, it’s worth noting this year (2026) that not only did number 7 win FIVE of of the 28 races but was also placed (top 3) a massive 11 times (39%).

What Was The Worst (Lower Number) Racecard At The 2026 Cheltenham Festival?

Of course, many of the higher number Cheltenham Festival racecards won’t have won a race.

But of the lower numbers, it wasn’t a great meeting for backers of number TWO or FIVE.

Number 2 only saw one Cheltenham winner in 2026, which was Dinoblue in the Mares’ Chase on Friday.

And at odds of just 11/8, you’d have been well behind just siding with number horses.

While number 5 also only had won winner – Kitzbuhel, who ran a blinder in the Browns Advisory Novices’ Chase on Wednesday (watch below).

The Mullins horse became the first horse ever to win both the Kauto Star Novices’ Chase (Kempton) and the Browns in the same season – returning at 11/1.
