According to the official result at Beverley on Tuesday, Toca Madera won the Eddie Smith Stakes result at 9/4, with Daniel Tudhope in the saddle and David O’Meara as trainer. The five-furlong contest on good ground was settled by a nose between the top two, with Toca Madera proving too strong when it mattered.
The Eddie Smith Stakes result was decided when Toca Madera hit the front a furlong out and dug deeper inside the final furlong, repelling Badri’s late surge. The 9/2 second-favourite found room approaching the line and flew home but could not find enough to collar the winner, beaten just a nose in 1m 0.79s. Ain’t Nobody, which had set the pace early, weakened in the closing stages to take third, 1.25 lengths back.
Toca Madera Lands Eddie Smith Stakes Victory
The Eddie Smith Stakes result vindicated O’Meara’s training approach as his runner displayed the necessary turn of foot when placed under pressure inside the final furlong. Jakajaro, sent off at 11/8 favourite and featured prominently in our morning preview of the race, was unable to justify market confidence, staying on at one level to finish fourth, beaten half a length. Opal Storm, returned at 200/1, took fifth, with Wor Faayth in sixth.
