ASCOT, 8 August — Shergar Cup day opened with a Hong Kong one-two. Tuco Salamanca, sent off 4/1 second favourite, won the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup Dash (13:35) under Jerry Chau, with compatriot Vincent Ho booting home 20/1 outsider Gold Star Hero for second and Fandom — this morning’s each-way alternative — back in third at 5/1.

The Race Story
Ten sprinters, five furlongs, 58.61 seconds — the Shergar Cup format doesn’t leave much time for tactics, and Chau needed none. Riding Ollie Sangster’s speedball at a track he had never ridden before today, the Hong Kong-based rider delivered exactly the kind of performance the international team format is sold on, beating a field that included Ryan Moore, Christophe Lemaire and Yutaka Take to the meeting’s first silverware.
The market got the shape of it half right: the second favourite won, but the 20/1 second and the placed 5/1 shot made the exotics sting. Bolo Neighs, the morning verdict for Team Europe’s Lemaire, was never sighted in the first three on the fast ground.
Tipster Accountability
Richard Gore’s headline verdict in the Ascot preview — “BOLO NEIGHS — Lemaire gets the meeting off to a flyer for Europe” — missed, though his each-way alternative Fandom did hit the frame at 5/1 to salvage the place money. Worth noting: the preview flagged “a dream British debut awaits Jerry Chau” about his ride in the 15:20 — the debut has already produced a winner one race in. Of the tracked ledger names, Templegate’s three headline bets (next best 14:10, NAP 14:45, treble leg 15:55) all come later on this card, and Paul Kealy’s four Ascot picks settle in Sunday’s ledger. No tracked money was down in the opener.
Looking Ahead
The Shergar Cup Stayers (14:10) is covered in a separate result article, and the day builds to the 14:45 Challenge — where Night Breeze, the site NAP at 11/4, and Templegate’s 2/1 NAP of the same name collide — before Chau rides Thunder Call in the 15:20 Sprint. The full card, teams and race-by-race verdicts are in the Ascot Shergar Cup preview.
