Montgaudry ran down the pack to land the 2:15 Prix de Bayeux Handicap at Deauville on Saturday, giving Christophe Soumillon a 22/1 surprise in the day’s Quinte+ — and rewarding anyone who followed the each-way whisper in this morning’s Deauville preview.
| Pos | Horse | Jockey | SP |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | Montgaudry | C Soumillon | 22/1 (PMU 23.6) |
| 2nd | Hayejohn | Mlle D Santiago | 16/1 (PMU) |
| 3rd | Niederbronn | A Hamelin | 26/1 |
The Race Story
The David Smaga-trained six-year-old had been dismissed in the market despite the booking of Soumillon, whose big-race radar rarely switches off at this meeting. Drawn high — a plus over Deauville’s straight seven-and-a-half furlongs, as our preview noted — Montgaudry was delivered late to collar Hayejohn, with 26/1 chance Niederbronn running a huge race in third for Mlle Delphine Santiago’s supporting cast to complete an outsiders’ podium.
Swift Flight and Crowdfunding filled the frame for Quinte+ players, while the gamble on favourite Saxon Village — sent off to complete a double after his Compiegne win — never materialised into a challenge, the market leader finishing out of the first five.
Tipster Accountability
A split decision for the morning preview. The headline verdict was Saxon Village — a clear miss. But the value line could not have aged better: “Montgaudry is interesting with Christophe Soumillon booked, and a high draw is a plus over this trip.” At 22/1, that is the best-priced flagged winner of the site’s day so far. None of the tracked ledger tipsters — Templegate, Paul Kealy, Oddschecker or Andrew Asquith — goes to post in French handicaps, so the day-one bankroll table is unmoved.
Looking Ahead
Deauville’s card rolls on towards the 4:07 Prix Michel Houyvet, the Listed staying test in which Victoire Magique (around 3/1 this morning) sets the standard for the preview’s verdict. Earlier, Mazzala had already upset the Group 3 Prix de Reux and Drazinda took the Prix de la Vallee d’Auge — on a day when Deauville favourites keep finding one too good.
