Arctic Dawn (11/2) led close home to win the 3:40 William Hill Extra Place Races Daily Handicap (Class 2, 7f) at Newmarket’s July Course, giving Hector Crouch and the Daniel and Claire Kubler stable instant revenge for Crimson Spirit’s defeat at Haydock six minutes earlier – and beating the drifting favourite Castle Rock by half a length.
| Pos | Horse | Jockey | SP |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1st | Arctic Dawn | Hector Crouch | 11/2 |
| 2nd | Castle Rock | Billy Loughnane | 5/2f |

The Race Story
Castle Rock’s backers had two problems. The first was the market: 6/5 in the morning, the returning Appleby colt drifted alarmingly to 5/2 by the off after more than nine months away. The second was Arctic Dawn, who had been running well in far hotter handicaps, including Royal Ascot, and arrived here fully wound up.
Crouch produced him with a sustained run in the final furlong to collar Castle Rock near the line, with Humam keeping on for third and Military Code a nose further back. The favourite ran with plenty of credit fresh – the engine is clearly still there – but credit does not cash winning tickets.
Tipster Accountability
The verdict in our Newmarket preview was Castle Rock, “short price and all” – a loser by half a length, though the same preview did flag Arctic Dawn in its value lines, noting he “wasn’t beaten far” at Royal Ascot. The site’s 50/1 July Course four-fold died back in the 1:55 with Graceful Song. None of the tracked tipsters in today’s tipster review were involved here.
Looking Ahead
Newmarket’s card closes with the 5:23 William Hill Price Boosts Apprentice Handicap over 1m6f, where the preview’s vote went to the progressive Jack Langley (15/8 in the morning) for the in-form Charlie Clover yard, with Fram Castle the 7/2 value alternative. Earlier July Course results, including Lex Victoria’s debut win in the newcomers’ maiden, are on the site now.
