Prix des Marettes Result: Mayra 10/1 Denies Fabre Favourite

Mayra (10/1) won the 3:32 Prix des Marettes at Deauville by a head on Saturday, giving Christophe Soumillon a quick-fire double on the card and denying the Andre Fabre-trained 6/5 favourite Sucre Nabat in a three-way finish to the newcomers’ fillies contest (7f100y, soft).

The Race Story

Twelve unraced two-year-old fillies, soft ground and a stack of big-stable money – and it was Soumillon, fresh from Montgaudry’s 22/1 shock in the 2:15 Prix de Bayeux, who conjured the winning run. Mayra, trained by Mauricio Delcher Sanchez, picked up strongly inside the final furlong to nail Sucre Nabat right on the line, with Lailissa another head back in third and 11/4 second favourite Kritic doing her best work late in fourth.

For bettors it was a familiar Deauville tale: the Fabre-trained Dubawi favourite, heavily supported to know her job first time, did almost everything right and still lost. It is the second beaten Fabre fancy of the afternoon after Critical Thinker’s flop in the Crevecoeur, and favourite backers on the Normandy card are having a thin time of it.

Tipster Accountability

The verdict in our Deauville preview was Sucre Nabat – “the class act on paper” – so that is a loser by a head, while the market watch, Gemini, finished out of the frame. The site’s 150/1 Deauville accumulator died with Uthred in the opener. None of the tracked tipsters in today’s tipster review had a runner in the race.

Looking Ahead

The Deauville card winds up with the 5:15 (UK time) Prix de Crepon Handicap, a 16-runner cavalry charge over 7f209y in which the preview sided with last-time-out winner Haditouni and Mickael Barzalona to “sign off the card in style”, with Mon Black Du Livet the each-way alternative and a high draw historically an advantage. Earlier Deauville results, including Tortsanlot’s Prix de Crevecoeur win, are on the site now.
