Dardanos sprung an 84-1 shock in Sunday’s IDEE 157th Deutsches Derby at Hamburg, giving trainer Andreas Wohler a sixth win in Germany’s premier Classic.
The Soldier Hollow colt, owned by Stall Bergholz and ridden by Wladimir Panov, came into the Group 1 after finishing second in the Listed Dortmund Derby Trial. He still overturned a deep Hamburg field, beating Chiefland by a length, with Salitos another length away in third and Kairos fourth.
The result mattered beyond the price. Dardanos became a first Group 1 winner for the colt himself and added another Deutsches Derby to Wohler’s record after previous wins with Pik Konig, Isfahan and Laccario. Panov, meanwhile, registered his first success in the race on one of the biggest days of the German Flat season.

The pre-race focus had been on more obvious contenders, including the unbeaten Gostam, but Dardanos broke sharply, travelled close to the pace and found more than enough in the straight. Thoroughbred Daily News reported that Wohler described Derby success as something that “always is and always will be so very special”.
That makes the Hamburg result a proper form reset rather than just a surprise headline. Dardanos now has a Classic on his record, Wohler has another German Derby winner, and the Liberty Racing pair Chiefland and Salitos leave with Group 1 placings that should shape their summer campaigns.
