Frankie Dettori Newmarket Crash Leaves Jockey With Broken Ribs And Thumb

Frankie Dettori is recovering in hospital after suffering broken ribs and a broken thumb in a road traffic accident near Newmarket on Wednesday evening.

The 55-year-old former champion jockey was driving when another vehicle struck the rear passenger side of his car, causing it to spin and flip, according to his management company H Talent Management.

Dettori was taken to hospital for assessment and remained under observation for further scans. His representatives said his immediate focus is on rest and recovery, while he also thanked the emergency services, doctors, nurses and wider medical team involved in his care.

Cambridgeshire Police said officers were called to a two-car collision on the A1304 London Road near Six Mile Bottom at around 7pm. Both drivers were taken to hospital as a precaution, no arrests were made, and traffic-related enquiries remain ongoing.

Doncaster return now waits on recovery

Dettori has not ridden in Britain since his Champion Stakes win on King Of Steel at Ascot in October 2023, but he had been lined up for the Leger Legends race at Doncaster during September’s St Leger Festival.

That appearance will now depend on the pace of his recovery, with Sky Sports reporting Dettori remains under observation after the crash and while further medical checks continue.
