Purview gave Dermot Weld and Juddmonte a fresh international target on Irish Derby day, winning the Group 3 Dubai Duty Free International Stakes at the Curragh before his trainer raised the Breeders’ Cup Turf as a live end-of-season option.
The Kingman colt, ridden by Colin Keane, was sent off favourite for Sunday’s 10-furlong contest and confirmed his progress with a first Group victory on the Irish Derby undercard.
Purview had been an emphatic Orby Stakes winner over a mile and a half at the same track last month, but this was a sharper test.
He travelled close to the pace and had enough in hand to repel Trustyourinstinct by three-quarters of a length, with Hotazhell the same margin away in third.
Weld maps out bigger targets
Weld told Thoroughbred Daily News that Purview is “beginning to fill into the promise” he had long shown, with the Irish Champion Stakes described as an obvious target after this Curragh success.
The Breeders’ Cup Turf at Keeneland is also firmly in the conversation, with Weld pointing to Purview’s tactical pace and Keane’s prominent ride as reasons the four-year-old could cope with the American test.
Purview also holds an Arc entry, although Weld noted that very testing ground in Paris could be a different question.
For now, the Curragh win gives Juddmonte a fast-rising middle-distance colt with options at Leopardstown, Longchamp and Keeneland.
