Alpha was cut to 10/1 favourite for next year’s 1000 Guineas after making virtually all for Ryan Moore in a six-length Curragh maiden win on Sunday.
The Aidan O’Brien-trained filly, by Sea The Stars out of brilliant miler Alpha Centauri, justified 8/11 favouritism in the GAIN Equine Nutrition Irish EBF Fillies Maiden on Irish Derby day.
After finishing second on debut at Leopardstown, Alpha stepped forward sharply at the Curragh, asserting over a furlong out before drawing clear of stablemate Ibelieveicanfly. Livenka was a further two and a quarter lengths back in third.
Debutante Stakes Route Now On The Table
O’Brien said Moore was “very excited” by the performance and indicated the Debutante Stakes back at the Curragh is the next likely target, according to IrishRacing.com’s report from the Curragh.
The market reacted quickly, with Paddy Power cutting Alpha to 10/1 from 20/1 for the 2027 1000 Guineas. That is a punchy early move, but understandable given the pedigree: Alpha Centauri won the Irish 1,000 Guineas, Coronation Stakes, Falmouth Stakes and Prix Jacques le Marois during a top-class 2018 campaign.
For Ballydoyle, the result also adds another high-ceiling juvenile filly to a summer programme already shaped by Curragh and Newmarket targets. Alpha still has to do it in stakes company, but the first proper signal was emphatic.
