Sovereignty will make the second start of his four-year-old season in Saturday’s $2m Stephen Foster Stakes at Churchill Downs, where White Abarrio, Magnitude and Baeza help form one of the strongest older-horse fields of the US summer.
The Grade 1 contest is due off at 6.14pm ET on Saturday, June 27, over 1m1f on dirt, with Breeders’ Cup Classic implications attached through the “Win and You’re In” series.
According to the Stephen Foster Stakes field details, Sovereignty is the 6-5 morning-line favourite for Bill Mott and Junior Alvarado after finishing second to White Abarrio in the Oaklawn Handicap on his seasonal return.
Classic Picture Runs Through Churchill
White Abarrio brings the direct form edge from Oaklawn, while Dubai World Cup winner Magnitude returns to the US on a three-race winning streak. Baeza, now also with Mott, adds further depth after last season’s high-level three-year-old form.
Read Horse Racing has already covered the expected Forged Steel and Navajo Warrior scratches, but even a reduced field leaves Churchill with a pivotal Classic division test.
For Sovereignty, the race is more than a comeback marker. A win would reassert him as the centre of the American dirt scene before the Saratoga summer and the autumn route back to Churchill Downs for the Breeders’ Cup.
