The King and Queen’s Portcullis returns at York on Friday afternoon with a penalty to carry, as John and Thady Gosden’s unbeaten colt tries to confirm the promise of his striking Wood Ditton debut.
Wood Ditton Winner Portcullis Puts Royal Ascot Claims On The Line At York
The John and Thady Gosden-trained Portcullis heads to York’s concluding Darley EBF “Confined” Novice Stakes on Friday (5:15pm) as one of the meeting’s more intriguing late runners
As the King and Queen’s colt will be asked to build on the impression he made when winning the Wood Ditton at Newmarket last month.
The Frankel colt went into many notebooks after his facile 5 1/2-length win at HQ back on April 16th (see below).
The Racing Post and Racing TV both frame the Gosdens’ three-year-old as a colt with clear upside after that debut success, when he was slowly away before pulling five and a half lengths clear once he found his rhythm.
Friday’s return is his first run since then and comes under a penalty in a race that still contains several unexposed opponents.
With William Buick riding and taking over from Ryan Moore (riding in Ireland), who was in the saddle on debut.
Weheedd, who is trained by William Haggas and ridden by Tom Marquand, is the main market danger, and has been supported in the betting during the morning.
While Ervani and Pearl add further depth to the field.

The Gosden Yard Like Today’s York Race
The plus for backers of Portcullis is that today’s 5:15pm at York is also a race the Gosden team like to target.
They’ve landed the £20k prize with Mostabshir, Lead Artist and Bowmark since 2023 – with William Buick riding two of these winners.
Gosden Strikes a Measured Note
The strongest source-backed angle around the race is not hype but the care being taken with Portcullis’ development.
Racing TV carries John Gosden’s view that the colt has trained well since Newmarket and has strengthened, but also that he remains young and can still get in a hurry.
With the Racing Post also reporting the same caution, with Gosden stressing that Weheedd looked smart on his own debut and that Friday’s race should not be treated as a formality.
“He’s trained well since, he’s strengthened and developed,” John Gosden said. “He’s still a young horse, a little bit inclined to get into a bit of a hurry about things, but we’re happy with him.
“It’s a nice field. William Haggas has put in a very nice colt who was second to one of ours at Yarmouth. He looked smart that day, so it will be no penalty kick.”
That makes York a useful test rather than a coronation.
Portcullis already holds an entry in the St James’s Palace Stakes at Royal Ascot in June, where he’s 20/1 with the best horse racing betting sites.
However, this run matters first because it will show whether his debut promise translates cleanly into a stronger novice on a different track.
Royal Interest Extends Beyond One Runner
Racing TV also notes that Portcullis is not the only royal representative on Friday’s card, with Warrant Holder (2:55 York) due to run for the King and Queen earlier in the afternoon.
While Gosden also has another leading Royal runner on the afternoon, with Point Of Law – going in the 4:25 at Newbury.
Even so, Portcullis is the horse drawing the sharper attention because his Newmarket performance suggested he could quickly move beyond novice company if he handles this next step.
