Klassleader Powers Clear In Jorvik Handicap, Staking Claim On Sky Bet Ebor

Klassleader surged through late under Tom Marquand to win the Sky Bet Race To The Ebor Jorvik Handicap on day one of York’s Dante Festival, giving William Haggas a third success in the race in six years and putting himself well in the Ebor picture come August.

Klassleader Powers To Victory In Jorvik Handicap, Eyeing Ebor Success

The progressive sort produced the sharpest performance of York’s early Wednesday action when he swept to victory in the Sky Bet Race To The Ebor Jorvik Handicap, a feature staying handicap on the opening day of the Dante Festival.

The four-year-old, trained by William Haggas and ridden by Tom Marquand, won the 1m3f contest by two and three-quarter lengths after the jockey allowed him to find his rhythm before delivering a sustained challenge late.

Sing Us A Song finished second, with Plage De Havre another couple of lengths back in third.

Haggas’ York Form Continues Strongly

The result gave Haggas a third win in the Jorvik in six years, following earlier victories with Ilaraab and Gaassee.
That record gives extra weight to the performance because the stable has a recent history of using this race to launch smart middle-distance handicappers into bigger summer targets.

Haggas said the yard had looked after Klassleader as a younger horse and hoped he had a good season ahead of him.

He added that the gelding kept going once he was asked and suggested there were several options from here, even if the longer-term shape of the campaign is still to be decided.
The Haggas York record is one to be feared, with his runners usually running well there more often than not.
