While the racecourse’s owners and trainers information states that York is continuing to invest in prize-money and facilities to attract leading horses from Britain, Europe and beyond.
James Brennan, York’s head of marketing and sponsorship, said the track was continuing to increase prize-money despite difficult commercial conditions.
Telling the Racing Post.
“Despite the challenging commercial circumstances that everyone finds themselves in, given the local impact of global uncertainty, we’re pressing on with increasing prize-money year on year.”
“It’s international by name and by status and, even if the different funding of prize-money means it’s still a long way off the value of a race like the Japan Cup, it has a level of heritage about it.
“It’s part of the British programme in high summer. We work with Ascot and Goodwood to encourage overseas challengers to stay over, and it has been the top-rated race in the Longines World Rankings three times in the last 11 years.”
He also said the Juddmonte International’s standing in the summer programme and its recent ability to attract Japanese runners added to the case for further investment.
Why It Matters
Prize-money remains one of the clearest signals of a racecourse’s intent and competitiveness.
York’s latest increase strengthens one of the most important Flat programmes in Britain, boosts the value of the Dante meeting immediately, and underlines the racecourse’s push to keep the Juddmonte International among the standout middle-distance prizes in Europe.
With the Dante Stakes also regarded as one of the best Epsom Derby trials in recent times.
After Desert Crown won both races in 2022, following on from Golden Horn doing the double in 2015.
