1000 Guineas Winners – Who Won The Race Last Year?

Sunday sees the first Classic of the season for fillies, so check out recent 1000 Guineas winners and everything you need to know about last year’s winner.

Who Won The 1000 Guineas Last Year?

The 1000 Guineas was won by DESERT FLOWER last year for trainer Charlie Appleby and jockey William Buick.

Just 24 hours after they landed the 2000 Guineas with Ruling Court, the famous double was completed.

Desert Flower was the hot favourite on the day and won at 1/1, beating Ollie Sangster pair Flight and Simmering in second and third respectively.

But this Night of Thunder filly was only seen once again after, and came third in the Epsom Oaks which was won by Minnie Hauk.

Desert Flower retired after her short Classic season, but still won five out of her six races during her career, winning £739,503 in the process. Godolphin may not have another filly like her again for a while.

Godolphin Look To Be Strong Handed In 1000 Guineas This Year

There’s a good chance that Godolphin will be double-handed in the 1000 Guineas on Sunday.

The first they have in the race is French raider MY HIGHNESS. Oisin Murphy has been booked to ride her for trainer Andre Fabre and this Ghaiyyath filly looks a top horse in the making.

She was a beaten favourite on seasonal reappearance at Deauville, but stepping up to a mile should be right up her street and she will come on for the run. Also entered in he Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot so connections clearly feel that a mile is her optimum trip.

Could give the Aidan O’Brien horse something to think about.

And then Godolphin have ABASHIRI in the race, who could be absolutely anything. The daughter of Frankel won a Kempton maiden last November and hasn’t been seen since.

Appleby’s filly looked the part on debut and should be respected for last season’s winning duo.

Entered in the Oaks and Coronation, so it will be interesting to see where she goes after the 1000 Guineas.
