Punchestown Gold Cup One Of 12 Grade 1 Races Over Five Days

As the Irish Jumps season ends with a bang, the Punchestown Gold Cup will be one of 12 Grade 1s across the five days of action at the track.

Despite it being late in the campaign, with a record €3.6million in prize money up for grabs at Punchestown, there is sure to be plenty of competition.

Saying that, the Punchestown Gold Cup has only attracted 14 entries and it would be surprising if even half of them were declared to run.

Nine of them currently entered ran in the Aintree Grand National, although horses like Grangeclare West (unseated 1st) and Gerri Colombe (fell 7th) barely got a spin round so could line up.

Who Won The 2025 Punchestown Gold Cup?

The 2025 Punchestown Gold Cup was won by Galopin Des Champs. He absolutely destroyed three rivals by 22 lengths but unfortunately he won’t be back to retain his crown.

Winning it last year was a third-time lucky as he’d lost out to Fastorslow the two seasons prior to that.

Willie Mullins’ classy 10-year-old has had a few setbacks this season and has only made the track twice. He finished third on both  occasions and didn’t look anything like the force of old.

There’s a good chance Galopin Des Champs may not race again after he missed the 2026 Cheltenham Festival. Whilst retirement has not been officially announced, owner Audrey Turley said in March that it is unlikely he’ll race again.

Likely 2026 Punchestown Gold Cup Runners According To Betting Odds

Willie Mullins is responsible for the first two in the betting, FACT TO FILE and GAELIC WARRIOR and the market is struggling to separate them.

It seems like they are both intended runners and could take each other on for a fourth time this season.

Fact To File was an impressive winner of the Irish Gold Cup when beating Gaelic Warrior by five lengths at the Dublin Racing Festival.

Fact To File was due to run in the Ryanair at Cheltneham but got pulled out due to the ground. Gaelic Warrior went on to win the Gold Cup at Prestbury Park by eight lengths.

If both turning up at Punchestown, they will be hard to separate again and this season decider could go either way.

It’s looking like a straight shootout between the pair and given last year’s numbers, they may not be joined by that many more rivals.

INOTHEWAYURTHINKIN could turn up after his solid third at Cheltenham but it would be hard seeing him reverse that form with Gaelic Warrior.

After unseating at the first fence in the Grand National, GRANGECLARE WEST may also make an appearance here.

As for the rest of the field, it’s hard to call who else will run.
