WATCH: Frankel’s Greenham Stakes Win – The Last Newbury Winner To Go Onto Land The 2000 Guineas

Relive the 2011 Greenham Stakes below – when the wonder horse FRANKEL bolted-up by 4-lengths in the Newbury Group Three – before going onto land the 2000 Guineas the later that month.

Frankel remains the last horse to win both races – so will this Saturday’s renewal see the next horse to go onto land first English Classic of the season?

Frankel The Last Greenham Stakes Winner To Land The 2000 Guineas 🩷🤍💚

When winning the 2011 Greenham Stakes at Newbury, horse racing fans suspected they might have a superstar in the making.

However, they probably didn’t expect the mighty FRANKEL to go onto win ALL 14 races in his career.

The son of former Epsom Derby winner Galileo headed to the Greenham Stakes with four wins to his name – with the most recent the Group One Dewhurst Stakes, which he’d won the season before as a 2yold.

Meaning the 2011 Greenham Stakes was his first run back that season and it was no shock to see Frankel sent off as the red-hot 1/4 favourite.

Under jockey Tom Queally, the Sir Henry Cecil colt pulled hard, but his class saw him romp away to an easy 4-length success.

With Excelebration, a horse he would go onto beat many more times, back in second.

Bookies reacted by slashing his 2000 Guineas odds that year (2011), with the English Classic run just two weeks after his Greenham Stakes win.

Frankel was sent off as the short 1/2 favourite for the Guineas and backers didn’t have a moments worry.

With the Cecil colt romping away by 6 lengths (watch below).

Frankel remains the last horse to win the Greenham Stakes and follow-up in the 2000 Guineas.

Although his owners (Juddmonte Farms Ltd) came close in 2014 – when Kingman won the Greenham and was a 1/2 length runner-up in the Guineas.

While 2017 Greenham Stakes winner Barney Roy also went onto take silver in the 2000 Guineas.

Strangely – the horse before Frankel to win both the Greenham and Guineas was Wollow in 1976, who was also trained by Henry Cecil and ridden by Frankie Dettori’s dad Gianfranco.

Frankel Went Unbeaten During His Career 🏆

Frankel’s 2011 Guineas win was his second Group One success, after taking the Dewhurst the season before.

But he went onto win eight more races at the top level – including the Lockinge, Queen Anne, Sussex Stakes, Juddmonte International and Champion Stakes at Ascot.

With the last-named race his final appearance on the track on October 20th 2012.

Frankel ended with a remarkable 14 straight wins, 10 Group One victories and won just shy of £3m in total prize money.

A career at stud followed Juddmonte’s Banstead Manor Stud in Newmarket – where he stands for £350,000 in 2026.

Who Are The Main 2026 Greenham Stakes Runners? 🏇

The 2026 Greenham Stakes will see top 3yolds ZAVATERI and ALBERT EINSTEIN as two of the main players.

Zavateri, who is trained by Eve Johnson Houghton, had a terrific 2yold campaign – winning the July Stakes, Vintage Stakes and the Group One National Stakes at the Curragh.

However, he failed to round off his juvenile season, when only 4th in the Dewhurst Stakes at HQ (watch below).

But that was a hot renewal, with the runner-up Gstaad coming out and winning the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at Del Mar.

Albert Einstein will represent Aidan O’Brien, who has never won the Greenham Stakes.

This Wootton Bassett colt has been popular in the 2000 Guineas market all winter but flopped on this return (6th) at the Curragh last month.

But despite this, is still one of the fancies in the betting for the English Classic on May 2nd.

We can expect him enjoy the better ground at Newbury in the Greenham more, plus strip fitter for that return run.

Many feel Albert Einstein might still be better over shorter and more of a sprinter in time – but it seems Aidan O’Brien is trying to find out more on that score this weekend.

Zavateri is priced at 25/1 and Albert Einstein 10/1 for the 2000 Guineas
