Grand National Reserves & Rules On Non-Runners/Withdrawals

For the first time, the Grand National reserves system has been increased from four horses to six.

This is to accommodate the newly introduced 72-hour declaration stage. Reserves can be brought into the 34-runner field up to 1pm on Friday 10th April.

However, if there are any non-runners after 1pm on Friday then the race will be run with NO reserves – instead a smaller field.

Plenty of connections will be keeping a close eye on the Grand National weather and ground ahead of Saturday.

With the first horse to come out – last year’s winner.

As Nick Rockett was pulled from the race on Thursday and WON’T be back to defend his Aintree title.

Full Grand National Reserve List

  1. Pied Piper (Gordon Elliott) – Won’t run according to trainer Gordon Elliott
  2. Imperial Saint (Philip Hobbs & Johnson White) – Set to run now Nick Rockett is OUT
  3. Amirite (Henry de Bromhead)
  4. Ain’t That A Shame (Tom Ellis)
  5. Deep Cave (Christian Williams)
  6. Buddy One (Paul Gilligan)

For example, if there was one non-runner from now and Friday at 1pm, then Pied Piper would get in as the first reserve.

There’s a good chance there could be at least one withdrawal before the deadline, so Gordon Elliott would have the chance to run Pied Piper.

But has since said Pied Piper won’t run in the big race.

Meaning Aintree lover Imperial Saint would also now get in.

And same goes for the rest of the reserves. The number stated above before their name is what order they would get in, should there be further withdrawals.

Buddy One would be the final reserve if six horses were to come out – which is unlikely.

All of the action will be live on ITV Racing Schedule this Saturday where the Grand National kicks off at 4pm UK time.
