Dan Skelton Prize Money Reaches £4 Million As Trainers Championship Looms

The Dan Skelton prize money for this season surpassed £4 million this weekend as he broke a National Hunt racing record.

Willie Mullins has pipped Skelton late on to win the British Trainers Championship in the last two years but that same heartbreak is long odds-on not to happen again this season.

It was Diamond Dealer who made the history up in Kelso as Skelton watched on from the Newbury parade ring. Tristan Durrell gave this horse a peach of a ride from the front and took home £20,812 in the Go North Forgive ‘N Forget Series Final.

Different to many this season, it wasn’t nessasarily a ‘Skelton Saturday’ as the yard had no luck at Newbury where their main runners were. Instead it took a winner at each of Kelso and Bangor-On-Dee to push them over the £4 million mark.

Whilst the Dan Skelton Cheltenham Festival winners were maybe not as many as they’d have hoped for this season, they still lead Mullins by over £2 million.

Barring a miracle for the Irish, it’s hard to not see Skelton being crowned the champion next month at Sandown.

Dan Skelton Prize Money Leads Rivals By £2 million

  • Dan Skelton Prize Money: £4,020,214
  • Nicky Henderson: £2,093,683
  • Willie Mullins: £1,934,754
  • Paul Nicholls: £1,791,059
  • Olly Murphy: £1,625,628
  • Ben Pauling: £1,505,194

However, we do still have the Aintree Grand National to come so there’s still time for Skelton to add to his total.

On the other hand, Mullins can still attempt to close the gap – he had five of the first seven home in last year’s National. Nick Rockett won the big one last season and he’ll be back to try and retain his crown next month.

Skelton was speaking to the Racing Post on Saturday after reaching the £4 million mark.

I set aspirational targets, sometimes we meet them sometimes we don’t. But I think things like that (aiming for £4 million) gives us all a bit of focus. The owners buy into it, they enjoy the journey.

I get to do it for these people, the staff, the owners, supporters and everyone else and they mostive mate. Winning £4 million, I’m the only name that goes on it, I’ve a part to play but not the biggest part by any stretch, that’s shared.
