Jockey Kieran Shoemark broke multiple ribs and punctured a lung after a fall at Lingfield on Saturday evening.
The 22-year-old was riding Cutthechat during the 7:15 RBL Surrey County EBF Novice Stakes when his mount fatally fell four furlongs from the finish.
Due to Cutthechat’s serious fall, Estupendo was also brought down, ridden by Dayverson De Barros, who was also taken to hospital but escaped any serious injuries.
Estupendo was also fatally injured in the nasty fall at the end of the sprint, with Shoemark eventually stretchered into an ambulance and taken to Brighton Hospital.
Trainer Roger Charlton, who has been good friends with Shoemark for a while, told Racing UK’s Luck On Sunday that he had received a message from the jockey over his health.
I messaged him this morning and he replied himself that he had broken 12 ribs. It left me counting me ribs, I don’t know how many we have but it seems that is the majority, and he’s punctured a lung. His head is ok but he’s obviously in a lot of pain. I didn’t see it but I gather it was horrific to watch.
Apprentice jockey De Barro, who was taking part in only his 14th ride, was taken to nearby Redhill Hospital for precautionary checks and escaped serious injury.
