James Doyle to saddle Young Rascal in the Derby

James Doyle has been released from his commitment to ride Dee Ex Bee in the Derby on Saturday, and will instead saddle Young Rascal in Britain’s richest race.

A long-running association with Young Rascal prompted the move from Doyle, and Dee Ex Bee trainer Mark Johnston has enlisted the services of champion jockey Silvestre de Sousa for the Classic.

The Chester Vase saw the two horses clash, and Doyle was aboard Young Rascal when the colt outpaced Dee Ex Bee to the post by half a length.

Johnston’s assistant and son Charlie said:

I think it suits everyone involved.

Obviously James has ridden Dee Ex Bee but I’m quite sure he was keen to ride William’s horse, having been to ride him at Breakfast with the Stars.

Silvestre won on Dee Ex Bee first time out and he has a great record at Epsom.

I think all parties are happy with how it’s turned out and we’re all set for Saturday.

The Chester Vase does not stand as Young Rascal’s only victory this year, with another win coming at Newbury in April. The three-year-old bested a field of 20 to win by five lengths in a hugely impressive display over one mile and three furlongs.

Young Rascal is currently an 11/1 third-favourite, with Dee Ex Bee a more distant 28/1 shot.
