Racecourse security to be reviewed after Ascot brawl

The security at racecourses is set to be reviewed after a brawl broke out on the weekend at Ascot, only a week after police reported violence at Goodwood, according to a report on BBC Sport.

The trouble at Ascot started in the stands as fans clashed, resulting in a window being broken. Following this, CCTV footage emerged which showed a brawl at the gates.

Racecourse Association (RCA) chief executive Stephen Atkins is in favour of increasing security at horse racing events.

It means employing the right level of security staff.

The question you have to consider is how many of those should be in high visibility and how many in plain clothes. That is something racecourses may want to look at and step up the level of visibility.

Two men were injured and were treated on the scene but thankfully, the police confirmed that the injuries suffered were minor.

The officials at the racecourse stated that the security at the event was immediately increased in an attempt to stop something similar happening again.

The British Horseracing Authority revealed that they will not tolerate this any further and will ban those who are guilty.

They said:

We have been in contact with the RCA this weekend and we know that courses will take into account the incidents as they make their security plans for each meeting.

The BHA does have the power to exclude individuals from courses and will use it where it can.

With the Royal Ascot approaching, the officials need to act swiftly to ensure that there is no trouble in the future. If that means having a significant security presence, then so be it.
