Mayor of Liverpool angry as football match set to clash with Grand National

The Mayor of Liverpool has hit out at the fact that Premier League side Liverpool will play a match against Bournemouth on the same day as the famous Grand National race, according to a report on Breaking News Ireland.

Mayor Joe Anderson called the scheduling “madness” after the Premier League moved Liverpool’s match to 14th April with kick off at 5:30 PM, which is just 15 minutes after the Grand National race begins.

Aintree, which is situated in Liverpool, will be packed with spectators and fans for the world-famous horse race, but with Liverpool also now playing on the same day, there could be some heavy congestion for police to deal with.

The Mayor said:

They (Merseyside Police) simply will not cope given the normal pressure of a Saturday.

With Liverpool attracting almost 55,000 fans to Anfield for home matches, the police will have a very tough job of ensuring that both sporting events go according to plan.

The Mayor is looking to organise a meeting with the Merseyside Police as soon as possible to discuss a solution to the problem.

The Grand National is horse racing’s most famous event and also attracts thousands of people which could potentially leave the police with an impossible task of ensuring both events are safe.
