Grand National winner Liam Treadwell announces retirement

Grand National-winning rider Liam Treadwell has announced his retirement from the sport after a hugely successful career, according to a report on the Racing Post.

Treadwell is famous for his Grand National win in 2009 and the 32-year-old knows that winning that race is the best moment of his career.

Treadwell retires after achieving 298 winners over the course of his career, something which he is very proud of.

The rider has retired from participating in the sport but still hopes that he can be involved with horse racing in some way on a daily basis.

He said:

It’s been in the back of my mind for a while and I made the decision on Sunday morning.

I need a fresh perspective and a new challenge. Since I banged my head in a fall at Bangor a couple of years ago it’s always been tough coping with the pressure. I came back from six months out with a different mindset.

I got hurt again at Aintree last year, and then soon after returning I sustained a shoulder injury at Cheltenham.

For my own health and relationships with my family and friends, it’s the right decision to focus on something else in the future.

His love for the sport is clear to see and the fact that he is hoping to remain involved in the sport after retirement is proof that horse racing is what he loves to do the most.

Treadwell’s best season came in the 2013-14 campaign, where he rode a stunning 42 winners. The retiring rider was emotional when he revealed the news but is also happy that a huge weight has been lifted off his shoulders.
