£2000 fine for trainer after horse mix-up

Trainer Ivan Furtado has been fined £2000 by the British Horseracing Authority after he ran two horses in the wrong races at a meeting at Southwell last month.

African Trader and Scribner Creek ran in each other’s races on January 14th, and as such Furtado was held to account for the mistake.

African Trader ran in the 3.25pm race for which Scribner Creek had been entered and finished third. Scribner Creek ran 30 minutes later in the race African Trader had been slated for, and finished in a dead-heat for seventh.

Based near Doncaster, Furtado had this to say:

It has been a costly mistake for a small training yard like ours, but we put our hand up that we made a mistake and we have to pay for it.

The BHA decided that the mix-up had been entirely accidental, and there was no foul-play or sinister forces at work.

Furtado reiterated his commitment to making sure the oversight didn’t happen again.

It’s not good that it happened, but we will introduce new measures in our yard to make sure it doesn’t happen again.
