He lit up the flat racing world last year with international and domestic success and Newmarket handler Roger Varian is looking forward to taking the wraps off Group One superstar Postponed, who is set to make his seasonal reappearance in the Dubai City of Gold on Saturday.
A general 2/5 favourite for that contest, victory in this race last year precipitated a stellar season for the son of Dubawi, who won the Sheema Classic on Dubai World Cup night before bagging two domestic Group One’s in the Coronation Cup at Epsom and the Juddmonte International at York on the Knavesmire.
Switched to Varian from Luca Cumani’s stable by owner Sheikh Mohammed Obaid Al Maktoum, the horse culminated last season with a fifth-placed finish in the Prix De L’Arc de Triomphe at Chantilly in October, for which he started the 15/8 favourite.
The six-year-old looks set for a similar pattern of racing this year with Varian keen to get the ball rolling with a victory at Meydan on Saturday. Regular rider Andrea Atzeni will be on board.
Varian commented:
He worked on Wednesday morning and went nicely, so we’re looking forward to Saturday. I’d say he’s in similar shape to how he was 12 months ago. We’re happy with him and he’s fit enough to do himself justice, but hopefully he’ll improve.
