Coney Island misses Cheltenham

In a season where a wide array of equine stars are set to miss the ‘Greatest Show on Turf’, Eddie Harty’s Coney Island joined that list after he was ruled out of a possible tilt at the RSA Novices’ Chase or the JLT at the Festival due to a bruised foot.

In what has been a trying week for JP McManus after retained number 1 jockey Barry Geraghty was ruled out of the Festival, his six-year-old son of Flemensfirth now joins the jockey who partnered him to a half-length defeat behind Our Duke at Leopardstown last time out.

Mark Walsh was on board the Irish-bred gelding when he routed a deecent field in the Drinmore Novice Chase at Fairyhouse in December in which he jumped exceptionally well before putting the race to bed emphatically in the two mile and four furlong contest.

A general 6/1 shot for the RSA Chase at Prestbury Park and around 9/1 for the JLT, Harty’s charge will now miss the Festival after injuring his foot.

Harty told the Racing Post:

Unfortunately Cony Island won’t be running at Cheltenham. He badly bruised a foot during the week and there is no way he will have recovered in time to travel.
